OpenAI to build 1GW mega data centre in India: Report
With India already OpenAI’s second-largest market, Sam Altman’s upcoming visit may reveal key details on its 1GW data hub and partnerships under the $500B Stargate initiative.
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly planning to establish a massive data center in India with a capacity of at least one gigawatt, according to a Bloomberg News report.
The project, part of OpenAI’s broader "Stargate" infrastructure initiative, could become a pivotal move in expanding its presence in Asia.
Scouting partners and building presence
The report indicates that OpenAI is currently scouting local partners to bring this project to life. Adding to this push, the company has formally registered as a legal entity in India and is assembling a local team. It also plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, reflecting India's importance as its second-largest market by user base.
Stargate: Global infrastructure ambitions
This Indian data center effort is part of OpenAI’s ambitious global infrastructure expansion under the Stargate brand, a private-sector AI infrastructure program announced in January by U.S. President Donald Trump, targeting up to $500 billion in investment. The initiative includes contributions from SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI itself.
Details on the facility’s location and timeline remain undisclosed . However, Bloomberg sources suggest that CEO Sam Altman’s upcoming visit to India in September may serve as a platform to announce further developments.
Context: India’s data center landscape
India’s current total data center capacity stands at under 1 GW, with projections suggesting growth to approximately 2 GW by 2026. An OpenAI facility of this scale would therefore dramatically elevate the country’s infrastructure footprint, outpacing many existing data center operations.
Moreover, multinational tech firms such as Microsoft and Google along with domestic players like Reliance Industries have already committed to expanding India's data center capacity.
Notably, in March 2025, it was reported that Reliance is in talks with OpenAI and Meta for local AI partnerships, potentially involving a 3 GW data center in Gujarat to host generative AI models underscoring India’s growing role in AI infrastructure.
