OpenAI names Prabhjeet Singh as MD for India
Prabhjeet Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.
OpenAI has named former Uber India and South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, underscoring the strategic importance of one of the world’s fastest-growing artificial intelligence markets.
The appointment comes as global AI companies intensify their investments in India, driven by rapid consumer adoption, growing enterprise demand and increasing government interest in deploying AI across sectors.
Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific. As the company’s most senior executive in India, he will lead consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations, while also working with businesses, institutions and public bodies to expand the use of AI across the country.
The appointment reflects OpenAI’s broader commitment to India, which it has repeatedly described as one of its top-priority markets. The company opened its first office in New Delhi in late 2025 and has steadily expanded its engagement with developers, enterprises and policymakers.
Singh joins after nearly 11 years at Uber. He led Uber’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and oversaw the expansion of services such as Auto, Moto and Shuttle. During his tenure, Uber also increased its focus on electric mobility and partnerships with India’s digital public infrastructure. Before joining Uber in 2015, Singh worked at McKinsey & Company. He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad.
The leadership appointment comes at a time when competition among AI companies is accelerating. OpenAI continues to expand its ChatGPT platform and developer tools, while other tech firms including Google, Microsoft, Anthropic and Meta are investing heavily in generative AI.
India has emerged as an increasingly important market in that race because of its large internet user base, extensive software developer community and growing enterprise technology ecosystem. The Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission is also supporting AI development through investments in computing infrastructure, datasets, skills and startup funding. At the same time, policymakers continue to examine approaches to AI governance, balancing innovation with safeguards around safety, privacy and responsible use.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously highlighted India’s rapid pace of AI adoption. Against that backdrop, Singh’s appointment gives OpenAI a senior executive dedicated to one of its fastest-growing markets.
