Perplexity makes Comet AI browser free worldwide
Perplexity AI has opened its Comet browser to everyone at no cost, adding a Background Assistant for paying users and stepping up competition with new AI-first browsers from Opera and The Browser Company.
Perplexity AI has made its Comet browser available to everyone at no cost, removing the waitlist and extending access globally after a limited release earlier this year. The company has said Comet will remain free, positioning it as a challenger to Google’s Chrome.
Comet has moved from an invite-only tool for subscribers of Perplexity’s $200‑per‑month Max plan in July 2025 to a free download for all as of 2 October 2025.
Perplexity reported “millions” are on the waitlist, and it has also introduced Comet Plus, a curated news add‑on included with Pro and Max plans or available for $5 a month to others.
What does the free tier include?
Core browsing with Perplexity’s AI at the centre, including Discover, Spaces, Shopping, Travel, Finance and Sports tools.
The browser has placed an “on‑page” sidecar assistant alongside its AI search, allowing users to ask questions, summarise what is on screen and navigate web pages in context.
For paying customers, Perplexity has added a new Background Assistant that can juggle multiple tasks in parallel, while an email assistant remains a Max‑tier benefit.
Comet has been made available on Windows, macOS and iOS, with Android marked “coming soon.”
The release has arrived amid a rapid shift towards agentic browsing. Opera recently launched Neon, a privacy‑minded AI browser that can act on users’ behalf within pages, while The Browser Company has introduced paid tiers for its AI‑heavy Dia browser.
Perplexity has described Comet as a full‑featured alternative to mainstream browsers, with AI features designed to help with planning trips, shopping and day‑to‑day admin part of a broader push to build AI directly into the way people navigate the web.
