Private Claude chats exposed in Google and Bing search results
Your AI chat could end up in search results. Here's what happened with Claude's shared conversations and why users are concerned.
You expect your AI chats to stay between you and the people you choose. Not the entire internet.
Over the weekend of July 25, users found that shared Claude conversations, and later published Artifacts, were appearing in Google and Bing search results. It was not a breach. It was a share button working as designed, colliding with a search setup that could not do what it appeared to do.
What happened
Claude lets users generate a public link for a conversation or an Artifact. Once such a link was posted anywhere a crawler could reach it, a forum, a social post, a public page, search engines could index it. The conversation was then findable by anyone searching, not just by people given the URL.
A Reddit user flagged it on July 25 using the operator site:claude.ai/share. 404 Media reported it first, followed by WIRED, TechCrunch, Axios and the BBC.
Only content users actively chose to share was affected. Chats are private by default and unshared ones were never exposed.
Why it happened
Anthropic's robots.txt already told crawlers not to crawl share URLs. That is not enough. Google's documentation is explicit that robots.txt does not keep a page out of search: a blocked URL linked from elsewhere can still be indexed.
The stronger control is a noindex tag, or an equivalent header. When WIRED reviewed a sample of exposed pages, it found they lacked one.
The responses
Google spokesperson Ned Adriance told WIRED that search engines do not decide which pages are public, and that Google gives site owners crawl and index controls and respects them.
Anthropic did not reply before WIRED published, but has since commented. Spokesperson Amie Rotherham said the company does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines, and that the links are not guessable unless users share them themselves.
Google had cleared the results by July 27, though Axios still found Artifacts indexed that afternoon. Claude's share pages now return a header equivalent to noindex.
Not a one-off
Forbes reported the same issue at Anthropic in September 2025, with Google estimating just under 600 conversations indexed. OpenAI pulled shared ChatGPT chats from search in August 2025. Google blocked Bard transcripts in 2023. Grok chats were indexed at scale too.
A public share URL is a public webpage the moment it exists.
What to do
In Claude, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Shared Chats, and revoke anything that no longer needs to be live.
Unsharing kills the link going forward. It does not undo cached copies, archives or screenshots. Keep passwords, API keys, financial details and health records out of any chat you might share.
