He was born and brought up in Silvepura, a village 35 km north of Bangalore. Since 2004, when Saumyananda Sahi was seventeen, he has made eleven short films and has written three screenplays. On the basis of one of his films he was invited for the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2005, where he attended workshops by Wim Wenders, Ridley Scott and others. For the past three years he has been studying Philosophy at St. Stephens College, and is hoping to study Cinematography in the coming year. At present Saumyananda is working on two feature scripts, and currently is completing a twenty-minute fiction film called Citizen (Nagarik).
