Build Beautiful Homes and Offices with startup, De Space Interiors
When Akshata Vig designed her own house after shifting to Bangalore, she never thought it would one day turn into an entrepreneurial venture. Akshata an architect co-founded De Space interiors with her husband Dev. “It all came to me suddenly. After I designed my house, one of our neighbours visited us and was impressed with the interiors and the looks of the apartment. It was through his word of mouth that I bagged my first contract and thus started the journey of De Space interiors,” says Akshata about the inception of De Space interiors.
Akshata started her business in May 2010 and today has worked on a blend of corporates as well as residential projects. Most of her contracts have been in Bangalore and the work she did for flats at Shantiniketan, Whitefield have been the most appreciated. “Our work at Shantiniketan brought us a lot of good exposure,” admits Akshata.
Akshata believes in giving a personal touch to the residential projects. She customizes ground space to get best space management and tweaks existing arrangements to get that a perfect and elegant look for a living space. Akshata considers residential projects as a challenge but also enjoys doing them the most. “I believe in a very simplistic yet graceful style of designing.” Residential projects are mostly high budget projects and De Space charges around Rs 5 – 10 lakhs for a project, depending on the kind of material the owner wants us to use.
Akshata’s venture has zero capital investment as the only investment done here is her mind and talent. Speaking about the marketing strategy she says, “We haven’t done too much marketing except set up our Facebook page. Word of mouth has also worked well for us.”
Akshata has three to four teams of carpenters and supervisors at one time to help her work on projects simultaneously. Akshata has her own workshop where she works with her team of carpenters to create products that she needs in a project. Her own workshop helps her reduce her turnaround time and helps her keep deadlines for projects. Speaking about the challenges in her business, Akshata says dealing with carpenters and retaining them is an arduous task. “Incentivising them to keep them motivated to complete work within a time frame is the only way out,” says Akshata. She is supported by her husband Dev, who handles the marketing and financial affairs for De Space, while she takes care of all the creative aspects of business. While currently she is busy completing Bangalore projects, Akshata sees herself pitching for projects at Hyderabad and Chennai in a couple of years.
