Satya Nadella's long letter to his employees at Microsoft

Satya Nadella's long letter to his employees at Microsoft

Friday July 11, 2014 , 3 min Read

Mailing employees through public forum seems to be the way Satya Nadella works at Microsoft.

6 months after taking up the role as Microsoft’s CEO, Satya has mailed his employees a long letter about his vision for the company.

Microsoft’s quarterly earnings are due for July 22nd; Satya is expected to make major changes in the engineering and organisational structure of the company.

In the mail to the team, he discusses about Microsoft’s new image, company’s culture and core values.

Values

It's a refreshing change to see Microsoft accepting that it's a mobile-first and cloud-first world.

Speaking further, he adds,

Billions of sensors, screens and devices – in conference rooms, living rooms, cities, cars, phones, PCs – are forming a vast network and streams of data that simply disappear into the background of our lives. This computing power will digitize nearly everything around us and will derive insights from all of the data being generated by interactions among people and between people and machines. We are moving from a world where computing power was scarce to a place where it now is almost limitless, and where the true scarce commodity is increasingly human attention.

He clearly highlights that it should be Microsoft’s passion to enable people to thrive in this mobile-first and cloud-first world.

Core

Microsoft was founded on the belief that technology creates opportunities for people and organizations to express and achieve their dreams by putting a PC on every desk and in every home.

More recently, they have described the company as a ‘devices and services’ company. While the devices and services description was helpful in the initial transformation, Satya believes that they need to hone in a new and unique strategy.

At core, Microsoft is the productivity and platform company for the mobile-first and cloud-first world. He believes that Microsoft will reinvent productivity to empower every person and every organization on the planet to do more and achieve more.

Microsoft Core

Microsoft will be relentlessly focusing on and building great digital work and life experiences with specific focus on dual use.

Their cloud OS infrastructure, device OS and first-party hardware will all build around this core focus and enable broad ecosystems.

Microsoft will light up digital work and life experiences in the most personal, intelligent, open and empowering ways.

Culture

He is confident that the company’s ambitions are bold and so must be their desire to change and evolve the culture around it at Microsoft.

He intends to make Microsoft the best place for smart, curious, ambitious people to do their best work. His joining as the CEO has brought a considerable change in the perspective of employees in the company.

He quoted Rainer Maria Rilke's words in the letter:

The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens.

Last 6 months have been a good change for Microsoft, people’s perception towards the company is changing and everyone expects something big to come from the company.

Satya has been able to provide that edge to the company with his charismatic leadership.

This is Microsoft’s new era, lets see how this rebirth works out for them.
