From selling fruits on a cycle to expanding his business to 12 countries, Surinder Singh has seen it all

Determination and relentless hard work can take a person anywhere he or she wants to go. This man's rags to riches story is a perfect testament to that principle. Once only a fruit seller who used to use a cycle for his business, he is now the owner of a million dollar business that has branches in over 12 countries.

This is the story of Surinder Singh from Abohar in Punjab. Singh was born into a poor family, and left school after fifth grade. He started with selling fruits on his bicycle, and within no time, he understood the importance and value of the fruit business and started a small stall in the local market. Once he noticed that the fruit selling business was boding well for him, he decided to expand, but found himself lacking funds. He took a loan from a bank and opened a wholesale store. Though things weren't easy, Surinder did not give up.

In order to gain value for his brand, he started the supply and sale of kinnows to nearby areas. This started to get immense traction, and it earned quite a lot of business. His name was heard everywhere, and this success enabled him to expand even beyond India's borders. At this moment, he is operating in countries like Brazil, Bangladesh, Dubai and Ukraine.

With an intention to keep expanding, Singh opened a factory to manufacture crates and also acquired four trucks, which cost him Rs 40 lakh each, to facilitate the supply of kinnows to South India. This attitude of always willing to scale up is something that never dies with Singh. He made sure that he installed the necessary technology to store the fruits properly. Attention to tiny details and his sense of priority to quality has taken him to a reputed position, because of which he is making crores of rupees every year. More than 400 people are now employed under him, and he stands firm as an inspiration to his staff, apart from being a role model for the youth who are willing to take up farming as a profession.
