Kate Winslet has always been forthcoming about the bullying she endured during her childhood. The Oscar-winning actress and mother of three recently spoke to thousands of children in London during the annual WE Day UK charity event.

Though 41-year-old Kate isn't currently promoting any films, she took the time out to inspire the youngsters, encouraging them to "be indestructible... and believe that you are worth it", while speaking about being overweight during her childhood and teenage years.

She said, “I had been bullied at school. They called me 'blubber'. Teased me for wanting to act. Locked me in the cupboard. Laughed at me.

I didn’t lock myself away and give up on my dream. I fought back. I had to ignore the negative comments. I had to believe in myself. I had to choose to rise above it all, and I had to work hard. You have to be indestructible to do what you love, and believe that you are worth it. And sometimes that’s the hardest part."

Winslet had won a British Academy Film Award in the best supporting actress category last year for her role in Steve Jobs. When she spoke to the press backstage, Winslet had shared a story about an interaction she had with a drama teacher who put her down when she was a teenager.

"When I was only 14, I was told by a drama teacher that I might do okay if I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts," said Winslet, adding in a stage whisper, "Look at me now, look at me now."

So, what I feel like saying in those moments is — to any young woman who has ever been put down by a teacher, by a friend, or even a parent, just don't listen to any of it, because that's what I did. I didn't listen, and I kept on going, and I overcame my fears, and I got over a lot of insecurity.

Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whitely, who is frequently featured on hottest women lists by fashion magazines was cruelly called 'kipper lips' or 'fish lips' by her schoolmates. Now that same pout is sought after in the advertising campaign of million-dollar brands.

Mila Kunis, another Hollywood beauty, has also spoken about having been bullied for her 'funny looking face' while growing up, since her eyes and ears would look too big on her small face.

Bullies are insecure and pick on others to feel better about themselves. Hundreds of children and teenagers have killed themselves, and many others suffer from low self-esteem and mental health problems because of bullying. So, it really helps when celebs reach out to children and convey the message that things do get better when they start believing in themselves and shut out cruelly critical voices.
