India's biggest river festival, Namami Brahmaputra, is going to begin in Assam today, i.e. March 31, 2017. Twenty-one districts in the state are going to celebrate this festival until April 4. President Dr Pranab Mukherjee is going to inaugurate the festival on the banks of the river Brahmaputra, and the Dalai Lama is slated to make an appearance on the third day. The Brahmaputra is considered India's only male river.
This festival comprises several cultural programmes — the aarti, film shows, exhibitions, and traditional sports. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Union Cabinet ministers Uma Bharti, Nitin Gadkari, and Mahesh Sharma are also going to be present at the inauguration ceremony.
Police Commissioner for Guwahati Police, Hiren Nath, in a chat with Zee News, said,
The basic objective of the five-day-long festival is to showcase the trade and commerce, culture, skill, industry, and tourism of Assam to the world. Over 40 VVIPs are likely to arrive here for the festival. We are taking utmost care to ensure proper security.
The Prime Minister's Office has also released an official tweet, wishing the best for the success of this festival.
Various delegates from Japan, Laos, Vietnam, and Singapore are going to participate in the festival. Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently launched the theme song for the festival. The officials are keen on driving this festival as an avenue of economic progress towards the Southeast Asian market.
