Facebook top downloaded iOS app of all time, Netflix highest grossing: App Annie
Social media and communication apps lead downloads, while audio and video streaming apps generate most revenues on App Store, reveals App Annie report.
To mark 10 years of the Apple App Store, app analytics provider App Annie has released a report on the top 10 iOS apps of all time. It has ranked popular apps on the basis of downloads and revenues. American and Chinese apps lead the way, accounting for 40 billion downloads each, and generating $36 billion and $27.7 billion in revenues respectively.
Facebook apps account for four out of five most downloaded iOS apps of all time. Facebook, which has been downloaded 700 million times between 2010 and 2018, leads the pack, and is followed by Messenger. Instagram and WhatsApp take up the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Google apps are the next best-performing ones. YouTube takes up the third spot, while Google Maps is at number six. Messaging and communication apps Snapchat, Skype, WeChat, and QQ constitute the remainder of the top 10.
While social media apps dominated downloads, audio and video-streaming apps were the top revenue generators on the App Store. Netflix leads revenue generation on iOS as it closes in on the $1 billion mark. It is followed by Spotify, Pandora, Tencent Video, Tinder, LINE, iQIYI, HBO Now, Kwai, and QQ.
Since 2010, the time when App Annie started tracking the App Store, iOS apps have clocked over 170 billion downloads and generated $130 billion in revenues for Apple. App revenues doubled between 2015 and 2017, surpassing Play Store’s.
According to App Annie,
“Since July 2010, over 10,000 apps have generated more than $1 million in consumer spend. The iOS App Store generates nearly twice as much consumer spend as Google Play despite a lower device install base. APAC accounts for nearly 60 percent of the consumer spend.”
At present, there are over two million iOS apps. On an average, 40 unique apps are used per month and consumers spend three hours per day on apps.
App Annie stated,
“The iOS App Store has transformed the world. Since its release in July 2008, this incredible marketplace has radically changed the way we live our lives… It’s hard to think of an industry that hasn’t been revolutionised by the introduction of apps.”
The report also listed the top 10 iOS games of all time.
Unsurprisingly, Candy Crush Saga is the most downloaded game worldwide. It is followed by Subway Surfers, Fruit Ninja, Clash of Clans, Honour of Kings, Minion Rush, Angry Birds, Temple Run 2, Temple Run, and Asphalt 8: Airborne.
The biggest consumer spends have been recorded by Clash of Clans. Candy Crush Saga is at number two. Last year’s augmented reality rage Pokémon Go is the tenth highest grossing game on the App Store.
Consumer spend in the App Store is estimated to reach $75.7 billion by 2022, growing a massive 80 percent from 2017. “The iOS App Store has brought unparalleled digital access to millions of people around the world and will continue to enhance our lives as we head into its 11th year and beyond,” App Annie stated.
