Astrophel Aerospace: India’s Frugal Rocket Revolution

For decades, space exploration has remained the domain of deep-pocketed governments and elite institutions. But the founders of Astrophel Aerospace believe the next era of space innovation will be driven by agile, frugally engineered solutions, and that India will lead the way. 

Launched in January 2022, Astrophel is building reusable, semi-cryogenic launch systems and space-grade components at a fraction of traditional costs.

The founding team includes Suyash Bafna, Immanuel Louis, and MD Taj Baba—a trio combining mechanical engineering, aerospace R&D, and thermal systems design. From 3D-printing rocket parts in his college hostel to coordinating multi-functional subsystems today, Bafna's journey is emblematic of Astrophel’s builder-first, cost-conscious DNA.

From Frustration to Flight: A Startup's Origin Story

The idea of Astrophel was seeded during the COVID lockdown when Suyash, then a third-year engineering student, designed a rocket injector and sent it to ISRO chairman Dr. S. Somanath, who responded with appreciation.

That single reply sparked a vision. Suyash joined forces with Immanuel, an aerospace engineer from MIT Chennai and ex-Agnikul Cosmos team member, and Taj, a thermal systems expert with experience on India’s Tejas fighter jet.

Together, they created a team that blends domain depth with an obsessive commitment to frugality. In August 2023, they became one of the first private Indian startups to test a semi-cryogenic rocket engine.

A Frugal Approach to a Billion-Dollar Problem

Astrophel isn’t just building rockets—it’s building a new paradigm. The company’s first test engine was fired at just Rs 6 lakhs, a fraction of what others have spent. Key components like cryogenic valves, seals, and cooling systems are built in-house, demonstrating that world-class space hardware can be built in India without global price tags.

Their strategy is twofold: develop affordable reusable rockets and commercialise high-performance cryogenic components. Astrophel is already partnering with Meson Valves to bring its in-house technology to the industrial and defence sectors.

Scaling with Precision and Purpose

Astrophel is currently developing a turbopump-driven engine, advanced avionics modules, and a flight termination system. A prototype reusable hopper is also in the pipeline—a step toward achieving India’s first low-cost reusable launch vehicle.

They have inked a project development MoU with ISRO for testing and certifying their cryogenic pumps, marking a major milestone. The team, now 20 strong, is scaling carefully but ambitiously.

Backed by Institutions and Ecosystem Leaders

Astrophel is incubated at BITS Pilani, IIT Bombay, and Maker Village in Kerala. The company has secured grants and early-stage funding from Startup India Seed Fund, NIDHI-PRAYAS, MeitY SAMRIDH, JITO JIIF, Soonicorn Ventures, and Operator Angels, among others.

Their $800,000 pre-seed round will fund R&D and commercialisation of critical subsystems, while a $5 million seed round is in the works to propel future launches and reusable prototypes.

Competitive Edge: Innovation Meets Execution

Astrophel competes with players like Agnikul Cosmos and Ethereal X in cryogenic propulsion. But while others raise millions before testing, Astrophel has already achieved tangible milestones at minimal cost. The team’s in-house approach allows it to iterate faster and control quality more effectively.

Its ability to deliver reliable cryogenic tech without imports is a breakthrough, with ripple effects across clean energy, defence, and industrial gas applications.

Lessons in Resilience and Advice for Founders

Astrophel’s journey is a case study in frugal innovation. From setbacks in early testing to scaling partnerships, the biggest takeaway has been to prepare for the unexpected and adapt fast. "The smallest overlooked detail often causes the biggest hurdle," says the team.

Their advice to founders? "Build deep trust with your co-founders. When communication and understanding are strong, everything else falls into place."

Looking Ahead: Reusability and Global Impact

Astrophel’s short-term goal is to complete ISRO-certified testing for its cryogenic pumps. Long term, the company envisions fielding a reusable, low-cost launch vehicle and exporting space-grade components globally.

It seeks to be to space what Japanese automakers were to cars in the 1970s—disruptive, frugal, and high-performing.
