View Brand PublisherWhen growth meets green: Inside Tamil Nadu’s sustainability revolution
From greener chemistry and regenerative farming to circular design and biomaterial innovation, a new wave of Tamil Nadu startups is building a future that gives back.
Tamil Nadu, long recognized for its manufacturing strength, is now leading a quieter but more impactful revolution where innovation and sustainability progress hand in hand.
From smart agri-tech and circular design to waste-to-energy breakthroughs, a new generation of founders is proving that economic growth and environmental responsibility can co-exist and thrive.
As the Tamil Nadu Global Startup Summit (TNGSS) 2025 turns the spotlight on climate-conscious innovation, ventures like GreenPod Labs, HVA Energy Solution, Fabrula, and iYarKai Tech Lab stand out for redefining how Tamil Nadu grows, makes, and sustains its future.
Keeping food fresher, longer: GreenPod Labs
In a country where nearly 40% of fruits and vegetables are lost before reaching consumers, GreenPod Labs, founded by Deepak Rajmohan, is tackling one of agriculture’s most persistent challenges: food waste.
Using biomaterial-based packaging inspired by nature, the Chennai-based startup extends the shelf life of produce without the use of chemicals or refrigeration. Today, its innovation is used in over a thousand banana containers every month, helping cut down 15,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions monthly.
Rajmohan believes waste is not an inevitability but rather a design flaw that can be solved. According to him, “Food waste is a preventable problem, and innovation is the tool to solve it.” His approach is transforming how India thinks about post-harvest management, not as damage control, but as climate action.
From waste to watts: HVA Energy Solution
HVA Energy Solution, founded by Anbarasan and Hemala, sees plastic waste not as a problem to lament but as an opportunity to innovate. Based in Ramanathapuram, their venture converts plastic and textile waste into GX Poly Solid Fuel, a clean-energy alternative that emits 90% less CO₂ and delivers higher calorific value than coal.
By partnering with government bodies, from the Defense Cantonment Board in Chennai to rural municipalities, HVA has built an end-to-end model for responsible waste disposal. More importantly, the company is turning waste collection into a source of employment, creating green jobs in the very communities that once bore the brunt of pollution.
In redefining waste management as an energy opportunity, HVA shows that sustainability can be both scalable and self-sustaining.
Circular design, reimagined: Fabrula
Founded in Erode by Shanmugavadivel and Vigram Kannan, Fabrula upcycles textile and agricultural residue into sustainable composites used for packaging, décor, mannequins, and even retail interiors.
By blending deep-tech R&D with handcrafted processes, the team has built what they call a “circular design lab”, one where beauty and responsibility share the same blueprint. “True progress is measured not by what we take from nature, but by how responsibly we return, restore, and regenerate,” says Shanmugavadivel, summing up Fabrula’s philosophy.
With TANSEED 6.0 funding and a growing roster of eco-conscious partners, Fabrula is scaling production to bring circular innovation into mainstream manufacturing, proof that sustainability can look good and sell better.
Smarter farming, inclusive growth: iYarKai Tech Lab
Founded by Senthil Kumar Babu, iYarKai Tech Lab’s flagship product, SILIR, uses AI and IoT to automate mushroom cultivation, regulating temperature, humidity, and CO₂ for higher yields with lower waste.
Through its hub-and-spoke model, the startup has enabled over 2,000 women self-help group members to start their own mushroom-based enterprises, creating livelihood ecosystems across rural Tamil Nadu. Babu says, “Technology becomes truly powerful when it uplifts lives - our mission is to turn innovation into inclusion.”
With digital platforms like MushroomShop.in and ChennaiSandai.com, iYarKai is ensuring that farmers not only grow smarter, but also earn smarter.
The StartupTN catalyst effect
What connects these diverse success stories? StartupTN’s TANSEED program has been the common thread, providing crucial early-stage funding, mentorship, and market access. It’s a masterclass in how government support can accelerate innovation without stifling entrepreneurial spirit.
Each company received Rs 10 lakh in funding, while women-led startups and those in rural, agri-tech, and green-tech sectors received up to Rs 15 lakh. This support offered access to a powerful network that opened doors to Fortune 500 partnerships, international markets, and follow-on investments.
The new green economy
Tamil Nadu’s innovators are proving that sustainability isn’t a separate goal; it’s the foundation of modern enterprise. Their ideas close loops, extend life cycles, and turn challenges into opportunities that benefit both people and the planet. Each solution is a reminder that the future of growth will be measured not by output, but by impact.
As the state moves closer to its trillion-dollar ambition, these efforts are setting a precedent for what comes next: industries that thrive on renewal, inclusion, and purpose-driven progress.
