Adani Group enters battery storage sector with India's largest BESS project in Gujarat
Adani Group has announced plans to set up a BESS in Gujarat’s Khavda, marking its entry into the battery storage sector and reinforcing its clean energy ambitions.
The Adani Group is planning to set up a 1,126 MW/ 3,530 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Khavda in Gujarat, marking its entry into the battery energy storage sector. Announced on Tuesday, November 11, this will be India's largest and among the world's biggest single-location storage projects.
“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. “With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability.”
The facility, comprising over 700 BESS containers, is expected to be commissioned by March 2026, the conglomerate said in a statement.
It will be part of the Khavda renewable energy complex, touted as the world’s largest renewable energy plant.
Battery energy storage systems are critical to enhancing the reliability of renewable energy, providing backup power, and improving grid stability. They allow energy from sources such as solar and wind to be stored and used when generation is low, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and ensuring a consistent power supply.
Adani said the Khavda project will enhance grid reliability, ease peak load pressures, reduce transmission congestion, and support round-the-clock clean power. It will use advanced lithium-ion battery technology integrated with sophisticated energy management systems for optimal performance.
With a power capacity of 1,126 MW and an energy capacity of 3,530 MWh, the system can extend power output for around three hours.
Gautam Adani added that the initiative will enable the group to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale.
The Adani Group plans to scale its storage capacity to 15 GWh by FY27 and to 50 GWh within five years, underscoring its long-term commitment to large-scale clean energy infrastructure.
“The project, in the advanced stages of deployment, will support peak load management and energy shifting, playing a critical role in decarbonising India’s power sector,” the company said.
With this strategic entry, Adani joins the ranks of global energy leaders investing in large-scale storage infrastructure, marking a transformative step in India’s clean energy journey.
Headquartered in Ahmedabad, the Adani Group operates across energy, logistics, metals, and consumer sectors, and has pledged to align its growth with India’s net-zero and sustainability goals.
