Pocket FM’s bold bet on building an Indian superhero universe
Starting with Shaktimaan Returns, Pocket FM is leveraging nostalgia and building a full-fledged Indian superhero universe.
“What we are trying to do in Pocket FM is to not build an audio platform, but an entertainment platform…We want to push towards building an Indian superhero universe,” revealed Rohan Nayak, Co-founder and CEO of Pocket FM.
Speaking at TechSparks 2025, India’s largest startup and tech conference by YourStory, in a fireside chat titled ‘Entertainment Without Borders: Building the World’s AI Story Empire,’ with Shradha Sharma, Founder and CEO of YourStory, Nayak said that after a 20-year wait, India’s iconic superhero has found a new home in the Pocket FM platform.
The audio-series startup has recently launched Shaktimaan Returns to kickstart the larger plan of building an Indian superhero universe.
Earlier in May this year, Pocket FM had launched an extensive advertising campaign for the launch of its new audio series, Shaktimaan Returns. The series features the OG actor Mukesh Khanna reprising his role as the voice of the superhero. Shaktimaan Returns aims to leverage the 90s nostalgia, attracting both millennial fans and new generation listeners.
However, Nayak’s vision goes beyond reviving beloved characters; it is about reimagining India’s entertainment landscape.
“There needs to be a lot of innovation in entertainment, and I strongly believe that,” he said. “One of the areas I’m personally excited about is building an Indian superhero universe, which has to happen.”
For Nayak, Pocket FM isn’t just an audio storytelling platform; it is evolving into a full-fledged “entertainment ecosystem,” Nayak emphasised.
