This third-generation entrepreneur is reimagining a 50-year legacy through people and purpose

When one grows up surrounded by the weight of legacy, they learn early that reputation is inherited but impact is earned.

For Aditya Vikram Birla, Chairman and Managing Director of Cosmic Birla Group, the story of leadership began not in boardrooms, but in conversations about integrity, discipline, and perseverance — the same values that defined his grandfather RS Birla, founder of the group in 1975.

“Discipline and integrity weren’t lessons, but a way of life,” Birla recalls. “Those values still guide every decision I make.”

At just 22, Birla entered the family business during one of the toughest downturns in the steel market. What could have been a trial by fire turned into a classroom of resilience. “That period taught me patience and persistence. You learn that leadership is all about learning how to steer through storms.”

Turning inheritance into innovation

When Birla took over as CMD in 2021, he inherited more than just a group of companies; he inherited a question: How do you keep a legacy relevant in a world that’s changing faster than ever?

Under his leadership, Cosmic Birla has transformed from a traditional steel and railways business into a future-ready conglomerate spanning EVs, FMCG, defence, infrastructure, and real estate, along with gaining further strength in the traditional set up of steel and railways.

Today, the group comprises 22 companies across 14 factories, generating an annual turnover approaching Rs 2,000 crore. Its flagship entity, Cosmic CRF Ltd., leads in cold-rolled formed sections for Indian Railways and infrastructure, while its newer ventures — NS Enginering, Cosmic Springs & Engineers and Raft Cosmic EV — signal a generational shift toward innovation and sustainability.

“Diversification wasn’t a leap of faith; it was a calculated evolution,” Birla explains. “We wanted to combine our traditional industrial strength with new-age innovation.”

Betting on a greener tomorrow

The turning point came in 2023, when Cosmic Birla acquired Raft Motors, a Maharashtra-based electric two-wheeler startup. The deal marked the company’s entry into India’s booming EV market, projected to grow to $113.99 billion by 2029.

The rebranded Raft Cosmic EV now manufactures models like Warrior, Magnetic and Zanskar, operating from new facilities in Bhiwandi, Dhule and a new assembly plant in Domjur, West Bengal. “The EV shift is our commitment to a cleaner, greener future,” he says.

The journey wasn’t without challenges — integration hiccups, market volatility, and regulatory scrutiny. But Birla handled it with the same pragmatism that defines his leadership. “Rapid innovation always brings friction. The key is to stay transparent, compliant, and consistent.”

For Birla, progress and purpose go hand in hand. Under his guidance, the group has embraced sustainability initiatives across operations — from green steel and solar power to energy audits, rainwater harvesting, and eco-friendly transport.

At the same time, its CSR efforts — from constructing a school for underprivileged children on Kolkata’s outskirts to tree plantation drives and programs for retired government staff — underline its deep connection with the communities that power its growth.

“Our expansion naturally increases our carbon footprint,” Birla says. “But that only strengthens our responsibility to balance it.”

Despite his focus on technology and diversification, Birla is clear on one thing: people remain the heart of every enterprise. “We strongly believe in building a human asset talent pool,” he says. “Businesses grow only when people grow.”

From leadership development to supply chain integration, Cosmic Birla’s internal culture is built around empowerment and innovation. This people-first philosophy has helped the group weather market cycles and emerge stronger from each one.

Leadership, for Birla, is about temperament. He points to one lesson that shaped him deeply, knowing when to cut losses. “I once had to take over an old, underperforming company that had sentimental value,” he shares. “But leadership meant stripping emotion from commerce. Integrity comes before attachment.”

That pragmatic clarity defines how he navigates both crisis and success. “There’s no substitute for hard work,” he adds. “You can be the smartest person in the room, but persistence always wins over shortcuts.”

The road ahead

Looking forward, Birla sees railways and infrastructure as the cornerstone of India’s next growth wave — and Cosmic Birla intends to be part of it. With new facilities in Durgapur and Barjora, and plans for integrated manufacturing plants in Chandigarh, Rajasthan & Assam, the group is doubling down on its engineering and industrial roots.

At the same time, its renewable energy and EV ventures represent the next frontier. “The future of growth lies in green mobility,” Birla says. “It’s not just an opportunity, it’s an obligation.”

From his home base in Kolkata, Birla is helping redefine Eastern India’s industrial map. “The East has always been the heart of India’s manufacturing story,” he says. “We’ve emerged as one of its fastest-growing conglomerates, and we’re just getting started.”

For all his achievements, Birla remains grounded in humility. “Every recognition belongs to every member of the Cosmic Birla family,” he says. “If our story inspires young entrepreneurs to build with integrity and purpose, that is success to me.”

At 36, Birla embodies a new kind of Indian industrialist — one who respects his roots but isn’t afraid to reimagine them. Legacy, for him, isn’t something to protect but something to propel forward.

“The name you inherit gives you credibility,” he reflects. “But the values you live by define your legacy.”
