India Towards a Startup Nation: How Mehsana’s Startup Model Became a Model for the Country

Mehsana, Gujarat-based NAMO iHub is India’s first district-level startup and innovation hub. Under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, it provides ideation, incubation and acceleration facilities. This hub is building a world-class innovation ecosystem by connecting talent, research and startups.

Once it was said that big dreams are fulfilled only in big cities. But Mehsana in Gujarat is changing this mindset. This is the same land associated with history and faith. It is believed that Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura here, and that is how Mehsana got its name. Today, this very city is creating a new identity.

It is no longer just a city. It is now becoming an inspiration. A journey began here that gave the country Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Now, on this very land, a new story of entrepreneurship is being written.

Established in Mehsana, Gujarat, NAMO iHub has emerged as India’s first district-level startup hub. NAMO stands for North Gujarat Amritkaal Mission Organizations — an initiative launched to give a new direction to innovation and entrepreneurship from the grassroots level.

This initiative is working towards building a world-class ecosystem where talent gets opportunities to grow, cutting-edge research is encouraged, and startups gain the strength to develop transformative solutions for society.

Aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, NAMO iHub provides integrated facilities for ideation, incubation and acceleration at the district level so that new ideas do not remain limited to imagination but evolve into successful enterprises contributing meaningfully to national development.

When the district decided, the mindset changed

Today, a homemaker in Mehsana is building a brand from her kitchen. A student dreams of building a company from his laptop. A young individual is finding digital solutions to local problems. New thinking is emerging from the lanes of Mehsana.

Behind this transformation is a strong vision. Former District Magistrate and Executive Director of iHub, M. Nagarajan (IAS), played a crucial role in making Mehsana India’s first district-level startup hub. He believes startups should not remain confined to metropolitan cities. If youth from villages and small towns are given a platform, they too can change the world.

In a conversation with YourStory and The Bharat Project Founder and CEO Shradha Sharma, Nagarajan says,

“Until now, the country’s startup ecosystem was concentrated in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. But gradually saturation began to set in. The question arose — how can youth from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities get opportunities? The Mehsana model emerged as the answer.”

A startup highway from local to global

In this Mehsana model, the district administration played the role of an anchor. Schools, colleges, industries, investors and government institutions were brought onto a single platform. Children’s creative thinking was identified at the school level itself. Local industry problems became projects for students. This led to local solutions for local problems.

An environment was created where both thinking and solutions are local. Investors are local and industries are local. This indigenous innovation model has become Mehsana’s biggest strength.

Nagarajan believes that if India has to become a startup nation by 2047, it must first build startup districts. An innovation pipeline must be developed from villages to talukas (sub-districts), from talukas to districts, and then to states and the nation.

Youth mindset: Not to seek jobs, but to create them

This transformation is visible on the ground in Mehsana. Venture studios have been established. Youth are learning the startup mindset. Children are no longer limited to the thought of seeking jobs — they want to become job creators.

One student created a solution to reduce plastic waste in the oceans. Another team developed a system to prevent accidents like gas leakage and fire. Someone built a smart device to help visually impaired individuals. At the school level, children are developing new learning methods through games.

These are not just projects. This is a shift in mindset. This is the local expression of the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Mehsana was already known for engineering and education. Economically too, it is a strong district. Now, with the addition of startup culture, new energy is visible. Platforms like NAMO iHub are helping youth in their journey from idea to prototype to business.

Nagarajan says,

“The most special thing is that every section of society is participating. Teachers, industrialists, investors and administration are all working together.”

Today, Mehsana is sending a message that change begins with a single step. When a district prepares itself, the nation moves forward. The day is not far when a unicorn startup (valued at 1 billion dollars or more) will emerge from here to inspire youth across the country.

The story of Mehsana shows that India’s future is not being built only in big cities. It is also taking shape in smaller districts. Dreams here are not small. The thinking is big. And the beginning has already been made.
