Gorakhpur’s readymade garments: Building manufacturing capacity for brands and exports
Gorakhpur’s readymade garment industry is evolving into an organised manufacturing ecosystem, with factories in the GIDA industrial estate supplying apparel to domestic brands while preparing for export opportunities.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district, readymade garments form an important part of the local manufacturing economy. Everyday clothing such as shirts, trousers, T-shirts, denim, and lowers move steadily through retail markets and supply chains that connect manufacturers to domestic brands and emerging export opportunities.
Much of this activity is concentrated within the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) area, where industrial units are gradually shaping a structured garment manufacturing ecosystem. Here, production takes place in factory settings where garment units combine job-work orders with dedicated manufacturing lines, allowing them to handle both volume production and customised requirements.
The garment trade in the district operates through a wide production chain that begins with fabric sourcing and trims, and extends through skilled operators, supervisors, merchandisers, and quality teams. Each stage contributes to the preparation of finished garments that are supplied to retail markets or brand distribution networks. When production systems are organised and consistent, units are able to deliver large volumes within defined timelines—an essential requirement for brand supply chains.
Under the Government of Uttar Pradesh’s One District One Product (ODOP) Programme, readymade garments have been identified as a notified product from Gorakhpur. The programme aims to strengthen the district’s manufacturing base by supporting enterprises with improved access to finance, market linkages, and participation in exhibitions and trade platforms. Through these initiatives, garment manufacturers are being encouraged to expand capacity and align their production systems with the needs of organised buyers.
One such enterprise operating within the GIDA industrial estate is Sona Industries, managed by entrepreneur Akash Kumar Yadav. The unit manufactures garments both for third-party clients and for its own in-house label, Fashion Science. After acquiring an industrial plot in November 2023, the entrepreneur began developing the manufacturing facility, and the production line has been operational for several months.
The unit’s product range currently focuses on men’s apparel, including shirts, trousers, T-shirts, denim, and lowers. The factory floor follows a structured workflow similar to established garment manufacturing facilities. Skilled operators manage the stitching lines while quality control teams ensure that finished garments meet production standards. Merchandising roles coordinate buyer requirements, production schedules, and dispatch timelines, ensuring that orders move efficiently from design to finished product.
Alongside contract manufacturing, the enterprise is gradually developing its own brand identity through the Fashion Science label. The approach adopted by the unit is to build a stable manufacturing base first and then expand brand presence over time. By maintaining steady production volumes through job-work assignments, the enterprise is able to generate operational stability while investing in its long-term brand strategy.
The unit currently employs around eighty workers and operates close to one hundred machines, reflecting the early stages of a growing manufacturing setup. As operations stabilise, the enterprise plans to gradually expand production capacity with the aim of increasing machinery and workforce in the coming years.
Beyond domestic markets, the enterprise is also preparing for opportunities in export-oriented garment manufacturing. Early discussions with international buyers and export intermediaries have already begun, reflecting a broader trend in which garment units in emerging clusters align themselves with global supply chains.
Gorakhpur’s garment manufacturing sector demonstrates how industrial estates such as GIDA can nurture organised production ecosystems. By bringing together infrastructure, skilled labour, and entrepreneurial investment, these clusters enable local enterprises to scale operations and connect with larger markets.
With the continued support of initiatives such as the ODOP Programme, readymade garment units in Gorakhpur are strengthening their production capabilities while contributing to employment generation and industrial growth in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
