Red Balloon Aerospace launches stratospheric pressure balloon
Red Balloon Aerospace’s first high-altitude super pressure balloon carried payloads from seven national and international partners.
Vijayawada-based Red Balloon Aerospace has successfully launched its first high-altitude super pressure balloon carrying commercial payloads, as part of its Mission SANA.
The launch marks India’s entry into a select group of countries such as the United States, France, Japan, and China, with indigenous stratospheric balloon capabilities, the company said in a statment.
The mission was launched from Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada and carried payloads from seven national and international partners.
Founded in 2025, Red Balloon Aerospace achieved an operational commercial flight within eight months, making it one of the fastest development-to-deployment timelines in the global near-space sector.
The startup’s VISTA platform uses super-pressure balloon technology designed to maintain stable altitude for extended periods without losing gas during day-night temperature cycles. The platform is said to remain operational for weeks or even months, offering a persistent near-space solution at a fraction of satellite deployment costs.
During the mission, the VISTA platform ascended to nearly 25 km above Earth. The launch also included payload testing for biological experiment systems, propulsion technologies, onboard computing platforms, earth observation sensors, and navigation validation systems.
According to the company, all payload missions were completed successfully.
“A single VISTA mission can support multiple customers, multiple experiments, and multiple industries at the same time,” said Sireesh Pallikonda, Co-founder and COO of Red Balloon Aerospace.
The mission also created a persistent platform for telecommunications, disaster monitoring, surveillance, and earth observation. At that altitude, the VISTA platform can function as a tower in the sky, enabling non-terrestrial network connectivity and disaster management in underserved regions.
In India, where vast rural and remote regions still face gaps in reliable connectivity, such platforms could play a critical role in supporting government-led digital inclusion initiatives like Digital India.
“VISTA validates our core near-space platform technology, and this is only the beginning,” said CVS Kiran, Co-founder and CEO of Red Balloon Aerospace. He added that the company plans to expand the platform’s capabilities through future missions and partnerships in telecommunications and disaster management.
Red Balloon Aerospace said its technology is aimed at addressing the gap between aircraft operations below 10 km and satellite systems above 160 km. Stratospheric platforms can provide longer observation times than satellites while avoiding the costs associated with orbital launches.
