Hari Menon steps down as Bigbasket CEO; Amazon veteran Amit Nanda to takes charge
The leadership transition marks the end of an era for one of India's earliest online grocery pioneers. It comes at a time when India’s online grocery and quick-commerce sector is undergoing rapid changes as companies compete with each on delivery timelines.
Bigbasket co-founder Hari Menon has stepped down as chief executive officer of the Tata Group-backed online grocery and quick-commerce company. He is handing over the reins to former Amazon India executive Amit Nanda as the business prepares for its next phase of growth.
The leadership transition marks the end of an era for one of India's earliest online grocery pioneers.
While Menon will relinquish day-to-day management responsibilities, he and fellow co-founder Vipul Parekh will remain on the board and continue mentoring the company’s leadership team.
Nanda, who spent more than a decade at Amazon India in a range of senior leadership roles, has been appointed CEO and will be responsible for steering Bigbasket through an increasingly competitive quick-commerce market.
India’s online grocery and quick-commerce sector is undergoing rapid change as companies compete to deliver products to customers in shorter timeframes. And, Bigbasket is turning to Nanda’s experience in ecommerce, technology and consumer businesses to strengthen its market position and drive future expansion.
Nanda joins the company from Amazon India, where he most recently led Selling Partner Services, overseeing a major part of the marketplace business. During his 11 years at Amazon, he worked across marketplace operations, product development, technology, and private-label brands. Earlier in his career, he held positions at Hindustan Unilever and Citibank.
“I am incredibly excited to join Bigbasket and build upon the phenomenal trust it has established with millions of consumers across India. Combining Bigbasket’s customer-first values with the trusted legacy of the Tata Group creates a strong foundation for the future,” Nanda said in a statement.
Founded in 2011, Bigbasket helped popularise online grocery shopping in India and later became a key part of Tata Digital’s consumer business following the group’s acquisition of a majority stake in 2021. The company said it now serves more than 25 million customers across over 60 cities through a network of more than 900 dark stores.
Reflecting on the transition, Menon said, “Having built Bigbasket from its inception to its current position as one of India's most trusted consumer platforms, I am delighted to welcome Amit as CEO. His deep understanding of consumers, strong track record of building and scaling businesses, and extensive experience across ecommerce and consumer sectors make him uniquely positioned to lead Bigbasket for its journey ahead.”
The appointment highlights how India’s leading digital commerce companies are increasingly focusing on experienced operators capable of balancing growth with operational efficiency. With Menon remaining closely involved as a board member and mentor, Bigbasket is aiming to combine continuity with fresh leadership as competition in quick commerce continues to intensify.
Sajith Sivanandan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Digital and Chairman of Bigbasket, said Nanda’s experience in managing large-scale businesses and developing product and technology capabilities makes him well suited to lead the company as it seeks to expand its reach and strengthen its position in the market.
