BonV Aero builds heavy-lift drones that fly cargo where vehicles can't go
Backed by Tim Draper, the Bhubaneswar startup already delivers Army supplies to soldiers in the Himalayas, carrying cargo to altitudes vehicles simply can't reach.
Getting supplies to soldiers posted high in the Himalayas is one of the hardest logistics problems the Indian Army faces. Roads give out, weather closes in, and helicopters are costly and scarce. For the last stretch, much of the work is still done on foot or by mule.
, a deeptech startup based in Bhubaneswar, builds the machines meant to take over that job: heavy-lift electric drones that fly cargo to places vehicles cannot reach.
Two engineers, a decade apart
The company traces back to 2008, when Gaurav Achha and Satyabrata Satapathy met as undergraduates at SRM University in Chennai, pulled together by a shared interest in robotics and unmanned flight. They went their separate ways after college and reunited in March 2021, when the two, with four other co-founders, started BonV Aero.
The duo of MTech engineers built the startup in Bhubaneswar. One investor estimates the company's costs run at roughly a third of what a comparable Bengaluru team would spend.
A drone built for thin air
BonV Aero's flagship is Air Orca, an autonomous cargo drone that the company says can carry payloads to altitudes of around 18,000 feet and fly without a certified co-pilot. It set a record, lifting 30 kg to just over 19,000 feet. Most drones aren't built to carry that much weight in air that thin.
The hardest engineering lies in the parts BonV Aero can't simply buy off the shelf: engines built to perform in thin mountain air, navigation systems that work at night and in poor visibility, and software that senses a drone's vibrations to catch problems before they become failures. BonV Aero builds these in-house to cut its reliance on imports.
The drones take interchangeable pods, so the same airframe can carry supplies on one flight, ammunition on another, or serve as a casualty-evacuation platform. The company has scaled payload capacity from 10 kg to 200 kg, with a longer-term aim of 400 to 500 kg, enough, eventually, to carry a person.
AI runs through the platform. Machine-learning models watch for the vibration patterns that come before a mechanical fault, and computer vision helps the drone spot obstacles and pick safe landing zones. The company also works with institutions such as DRDO, IISc and the IITs on the underlying research.
Already flying for the Army
The military is BonV Aero's primary customer. Its drones are already in active service with the Indian Army for high-altitude logistics. The company has run a drone-logistics training programme for the Army Service Corps, and its platforms have been tested in Sikkim and other border regions.
Unusually for an early deeptech company, BonV is already generating revenue rather than relying solely on investment. Beyond defence, the same platforms have civilian applications in disaster response, delivering supplies to areas cut off by floods or landslides.
The company has raised about $5 million to date. Among its backers is the Silicon Valley investor Tim Draper, an early backer of Tesla and SpaceX, whom BonV won over as a global winner of his startup competition, Meet the Drapers.
Indian investors Unicorn India Ventures, Inflection Point Ventures and Headstart have also participated, alongside more than 30 unicorn founders as angel investors. Separately, the company has drawn institutional support from bodies including STPI, Startup Odisha and the Atal Innovation Mission.
BonV Aero's next step is scaling up. It is developing what it calls Odisha's first drone park on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, a Rs 300 crore facility meant to expand production and testing. The founders' bigger ambition is to move from carrying cargo to carrying heavier loads, and eventually toward carrying people, the air-taxi idea the company started with and set aside until the drones and the rules catch up.
