Hello,
Should we be alarmed about the recent OpenAI hack?
OpenAI’s agent ran amok and hacked into AI startup Hugging Face. It was unprecedented and happened at superhuman speed, without permission or human intervention. This incident serves as a big wake-up call to the tech industry and a warning for the future: AI agents are good hackers now and we must prepare for this with a sense of urgency.
In other news, actress Zendaya, who plays Goddess Athena in the movie Odyssey, sparked a debate on ownership and trade of rare archaeological finds when she attended a photocall in London wearing earrings allegedly made from ancient Iranian artefacts.
The artefacts, said to date back to the 1st millennium BC, were loaned by a Mayfair dealer, who sees this as a celebration of “the remarkable artistry” of ancient Persian goldsmiths. However, academics have a differing view.
Meanwhile, India has said it will continue to engage with the United States on a bilateral trade agreement. This announcement comes after the Trump administration imposed new tariff measures.

Founder burnout in startups

Recently, over 150 founders, investors, and startup leaders gathered at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru’s Yelahanka, swapping boardrooms for badminton courts. It was the eighth edition of the Bertelsmann Badminton Championship, organised by venture capital firm Bertelsmann India Investments (BII).
Executives from Accel, Blume Ventures, Innoven Capital, Titan Capital, Aavishkaar Capital, Ascent Capital, Stellaris, and Cactus Partners, alongside founders from startups such as Univest, Handpickd, Fairdeal, Inito, and CureBay, came together for one consistent goal: Rally For Health.
Key takeaways:
- As part of the effort, BII introduced the inaugural BII Founder Wellness Survey to understand how founders, investors, and other startup ecosystem participants manage their physical and mental well-being while building and supporting businesses.
- The survey found that nearly 88% of founders and investors work at least 50 hours a week, 71% experiencing burnout, and 41% sleep six hours or less. At the same time, around 68% of respondents said they spend at least 30 minutes on physical activity every day, showing that many are making a conscious effort to stay fit despite demanding schedules.
- “As the startup ecosystem has evolved, we’re entering what is effectively our second decade as a venture capital industry,” said Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director, Bertelsmann India Investments. “Building companies and investing in them is an intense rat race. People often neglect their own health while focusing on creating businesses.”
Weekly funding
VC inflow plummets

Venture capital (VC) funding into Indian startups saw a sharp decline in the fourth week of July primarily due to the absence of large deals, signifying the uncertain nature of fund inflow in the present environment.
The total funding for the week was $162 million across 17 deals. In contrast, the previous week saw VC funding of $431 million, aided by the deals of Emergent and Udaan.
Key takeaways:
- The steep fall in VC funding reveals the challenges faced by the Indian startup ecosystem as the macroeconomic environment continues to remain uncertain leading to an uneven inflow of capital. In addition, there has not been any definite investing theme for the ecosystem till now.
- During this week, the highest funded transactions came in the range of $40 million.
- The dominant theme of VC funding is around AI, and unfortunately in India the pace has still not picked up by these kinds of startups. There are a few examples like Sarvam and Emergent, but this category is yet to gather momentum.
