RenaissThera is designing oral drugs for obesity and type 2 diabetes
The Bengaluru-based company uses AI-led discovery to search for small molecules that act on the same receptors as injectable GLP-1 drugs, aiming for a cheaper alternative.
Obesity drugs that changed the field are peptides, and peptides are injected. They need cold storage, are expensive to manufacture, and the supply chain that carries them does not reach most of the world. A pill that acted on the same biology would be cheaper to make and far easier to distribute.
was founded in Bengaluru in 2023 to fill this gap. Dr Ramkesh Meena is the chief executive and Sudhir Nagarajan is the managing director. The company describes its purpose as developing affordable therapies for patients in markets that newer drugs reach late or not at all.
Its focus is cardio-metabolic disease: type 2 diabetes, obesity, and the conditions that travel with them. The approach is to find small molecules that act on receptors already proven to work, rather than search for a completely new biological mechanism. That reduces one kind of risk, since the target is already proven to matter. What's left is the harder problem: designing a molecule small enough to take as a pill.
Seven programmes, one pathway family
The targets are GLP-1 and GIP, both incretins. Incretins are hormones the gut releases after a meal to signal the pancreas to produce insulin. They also slow how quickly the stomach empties and act on the brain to reduce appetite, which is why drugs built on them affect body weight as well as blood sugar. The receptor is the docking point on a cell that the hormone binds to, and it is what a drug has to reach.
GLP-1 is the pathway behind the current generation of weight-loss drugs. GIP is the second receptor in the newer dual-action medicines. Unusually, both turning it on and turning it off have been shown to reduce weight.
The company's published pipeline runs to seven small-molecule programmes. Two target GLP-1 and GIP separately, one blocks GIP rather than activating it, two combine both receptors, and two go after apelin, a separate metabolic target. All seven are at the discovery stage.
Molecules are designed and screened using AI and machine learning tools. In October 2024, the company entered a drug discovery collaboration with VedTechBio, a Bengaluru firm whose platform it uses alongside dedicated research teams. RenaissThera also draws on India's contract research sector for early-stage laboratory work, which lets the company keep its team small.
In June 2025, it announced what it called a discovery milestone in its oral obesity programme, on molecules targeting the GIP receptor. It said the compounds had shown activity in cell lines and in animal studies. These are the company's own claims. None of it has gone through peer review or been tested on people.
Arali Ventures, and the road to IND
RenaissThera closed a first seed round backed by angel investors in December 2024. In November 2025, it joined the incubation programme at C-CAMP, the Bengaluru research and innovation centre, which gives early companies laboratory access and support. The company also presented at BioAsia in Hyderabad in February 2025.
In June 2026, it announced a further seed round led by Arali Ventures, an enterprise technology fund investing from a $35 million second fund. Arali described it as its first investment in biotechnology and drug discovery. Neither round's size has been disclosed; one database estimates total funding at under $500,000 before the June round.
The funds will be directed to optimise lead candidates and move towards Investigational New Drug readiness, the regulatory filing a company must clear before it can begin human trials. Meena has said the goal is an oral drug that stands apart from existing options, and that can be made affordably at scale.
That filing is the next real marker, and everything published so far sits at the discovery end of a process that takes most drugs a decade.
