Bluehill.VC raises Rs 400 Cr for maiden frontier-tech fund
The VC firm, which invests in startups across defence, space, semiconductors, energy and advanced manufacturing, plans to deploy Rs 80 Cr over the next six months
Bluehill.VC, a frontier-tech-focused venture capital firm based in Chennai, announced the final close of its maiden Rs 400 crore fund, including the full subscription of its Rs 50 crore greenshoe option on Thursday. A greenshoe option is an option that allows a fund to raise more money than its original target, if there is enough investor demand.
In a statement, the firm said that the fund has attracted strong participation from institutional investors including SIDBI, the Governments of Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, alongside family offices, accomplished entrepreneurs, and UHNIs from India and the Middle East. The firm plans to deploy Rs 80 crore over the next six months.
Bluehill.VC invests from Seed to Series A in startups building proprietary technologies across Energy, EVs, Nuclear, Semiconductors, Advanced Materials, Defence, Space, Water, Manufacturing, Robotics, Industrial Technologies and IoT.
Some of its current portfolio companies include EtherealX, which is building reusable launch systems; Zebu Intelligent Systems, a counter-drone technology company working closely with the Indian Armed Forces; Helex, which is developing advanced therapeutics for patients with genetic kidney diseases; Sophrosyne Technologies, a fabless semiconductor startup building advanced biosensing SoCs for wearable and digital health devices; and optoML, which is developing a holistic FinFET-based Analog AI System-on-Chip platform with integrated optical interconnects.
"The [new] fund aims to build a concentrated portfolio of 15–16 companies, investing an average of up to $1-2 million in the first institutional round while working closely with founders through its invest-and-build approach," the statement read.
Commenting on the fund closure, Manu Iyer, Managing Partner and Co-founder, Bluehill.VC, said, "For the past two decades, venture capital has largely been driven by consumer, software and internet businesses. We believe the next wave of enduring value will be created by companies solving hard engineering and scientific problems. India today has the talent, policy momentum and entrepreneurial ambition to build globally competitive businesses across defence, semiconductors, space, energy and advanced manufacturing."
He added, "The final close of our maiden fund is a strong endorsement of that belief. More importantly, it reflects the confidence our investors have placed in our ability to identify exceptional founders early and partner with them for the long term. Our ambition is simple - to help build companies from India that don't just participate in global markets, but define them."
"Frontier-tech investing requires a different kind of conviction. These companies take longer to build, demand deeper technical understanding and solve problems that few others are willing to tackle. But when they succeed, they create technologies that are difficult to replicate, globally competitive, and capable of defining entire industries," said Sridhar Parthasarathy, Managing Partner & Co-founder, Bluehill.VC.
"Our focus is on founders building from first principles, creating genuine technological breakthroughs rather than incremental improvements. We believe exceptional frontier-tech founders aren't confined to just premier institutes. They are emerging from research laboratories, manufacturing clusters, defence programs and universities across the country. We're building Bluehill to discover these founders early, back them with conviction and stay alongside them as they build globally significant companies," he added.
