Xovian is building satellites that listen for radio signals rather than take images
The Bengaluru-based company is developing radio-frequency nanosatellites with onboard processing, aimed at tracking ships and aircraft that optical imaging cannot.
An imaging satellite needs daylight and a clear sky. Cloud, darkness or a vessel that simply moves between passes will defeat it. Radio frequency sensing works differently: it detects the signals a ship, an aircraft or their radar emits, which travel regardless of weather or light, and reveal something a photograph cannot, namely what a piece of equipment is doing.
was founded in 2019 by Ankit Bhateja and Raghav Sharma, and works out of Bengaluru. Its stated aim is a constellation of radio frequency nanosatellites, small spacecraft that capture and interpret signals rather than images. Its investors have described the team as having built satellites and space-grade components before, with cost and scalability as the design constraint.
The specific gap the company points to is a familiar one in maritime monitoring. Ships are required to broadcast their position, and a vessel that wants to avoid being tracked turns that transponder off. It goes dark to optical and transponder-based systems alike, but it does not stop emitting other signals.
Processing in orbit rather than on the ground
What the company calls AI-native is the design decision underneath the constellation. A conventional satellite collects data and sends it down for analysis, which can introduce delays ranging from minutes to hours, depending on the system. Xovian's stated approach is to interpret the signals aboard the spacecraft, so what reaches the ground is already an insight rather than a raw feed.
That matters for the applications it names. Tracking a vessel that has gone dark, or an aircraft, or a pattern of radar activity, is only useful while the information is current. The company describes low-latency, high-fidelity output as the point of the architecture.
The hardware ambition is a multi-frequency radio frequency sensor developed in India. At the time of its pre-seed round, the company said the payload would fly aboard an ISRO launch vehicle to validate the sensing technology, with space trials expected by the end of 2025.
It positions the result as sovereign radio frequency intelligence, meaning capability India owns rather than buys. Its named markets run across government, enterprise and humanitarian users, and it has talked about pilots in India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Nanosatellites are what make the economics work. A constellation needs many spacecraft to revisit the same patch of ocean often enough to be useful, and small satellites are cheap enough to launch in numbers.
Two rounds, and a satellite still to fly
Xovian raised $2.5 million in a pre-seed round announced in August 2025, led by Piper Serica and Turbostart with Inflection Point Ventures and Eaglewings Ventures participating. In April 2026, it raised a further $2 million, about Rs 18.7 crore, in a round led by the investor Ashish Kacholia, with Inflection Point Ventures returning.
The second round is for developing the first radio frequency satellite, expanding the engineering and AI teams, and building commercial partnerships. Total disclosed funding across both rounds stands at about $4.5 million.
The company sits in a sector filling quickly. Pixxel, SatSure and Dhruva Space are all working on satellite data from India, though on optical imaging and analytics rather than radio frequency, and Xovian's positioning rests on that being a different problem.
The space trials described as expected by the end of 2025 have not been announced. The company's own description of the April 2026 round, which is for developing its first satellite, suggests the payload has yet to fly.
