View Brand PublisherAPAII brings 30+ angel funds together to strengthen India’s early-stage capital ecosystem
The Association of Prolific Angels in India (APAII) aims to expand the country’s angel investor base to 1 million and mobilize $3 billion in early-stage capital over the next five years.
India's angel investing ecosystem today saw the launch of the Association of Prolific Angels in India (APAII), a national body supported by 30+ leading angel funds, early-stage funds, family offices, micro VCs, and individual angel investors. Supported by TiE Mumbai, APAII aims to strengthen India's domestic early-stage capital pool, expand the country's angel investor base to 1 million, and position India as the world's largest unicorn hub over the next two decades. It will also serve as a regulatory and operational bridge between angel investors and policymakers.
India currently has an estimated 100+ angel funds and 1,00,000 angel investors, who deployed close to $1 billion in early-stage investments in FY25. APAII aims to grow this base more than a hundred-fold, while mobilizing an estimated $3 billion in early-stage capital over the next five years and scaling to $30 billion in annual angel participation by 2047.
The association will be led by Satish Kataria, a venture capital veteran with more than two decades of experience in early-stage investments, who joins APAII as its first Executive Director.
Growth of angel funds in India
It is estimated that overall contribution through angel funds has increased by 85-115% over the last five years, according to SEBI data.

What APAII aims to do
APAII’s objectives include mobilizing domestic risk capital by bringing together angel funds, early-stage funds, UHNIs, family offices, micro VCs, corporates, and diaspora investors on a single national platform. It also aims to serve as the collective voice of India's angel investing community with regulators and policymakers, representing member interests on issues affecting early-stage capital formation.
The association plans to build structured education programs, governance standards, and due-diligence resources to expand and professionalize India's angel investor base. It also aims to extend angel participation beyond metro hubs into Tier II and Tier III cities and districts.
APAII will provide a single, structured interface connecting angel investors, HNIs, family offices, and funds with founders, regulators, and each other. It also plans to support founders through mentorship, industry connects, and go-to-market support, contributing to the objectives of the Viksit Bharat movement, innovation, and job creation.
The APAII leadership
The key office bearers of APAII are Dr Apoorva Ranjan Sharma, Co-founder, Venture Catalysts++ & 100 Unicorns and President, TiE Mumbai; Vinay Bansal, Co-founder, Inflection Point Ventures and Physis Capital; Gaurav Singhvi, Co-founder, WeFounder Circle; Shanti Mohan, Founder, LetsVenture; Hanuman Tripathi, Partner, Lead Angels; Vikrant Varshney, Founder, Sucseed Ventures; and Satish Kataria, Executive Director, APAII.
Dr. Apoorva Ranjan Sharma, President, APAII, said India is at an inflection point. “To build 1,000 unicorns by 2047, we need not just more startups, but a far deeper, more organized base of domestic risk capital standing behind them. APAII exists to build exactly that, a unified, professional, and policy-engaged community of angel investors who can back Indian founders at scale”
Vinay Bansal, Co-founder, Inflection Point Ventures, said angel investing in India has grown rapidly, but remains fragmented and under-represented in policy conversations that directly affect it. “Bringing 30+ funds and India's leading angel investors under one roof gives the industry the collective voice it has long needed,” he said.
Hanuman Tripathi, Partner, Lead Angels, said angel funds need to come under one umbrella to “constantly enhance investor education, smoothen governance, launch new products, help founders to build stronger growth-oriented companies, and address other areas”. “APAII should be able to fill this gap,” he said.
The advisory board includes Harish Mehta, Founder and CMD, Onward Group, Co-founder, NASSCOM and Founding President, TiE India; Atul Nishar, Founder and Chairman, Hexaware Technologies; Nishith Desai, Founding Managing Partner, Nishith Desai Associates; and Varun Bajaj, Founding Managing Partner, RSD Bajaj Global Law Firm and Legal and Policy Expert, APAII.
Nishith Desai, Founding Managing Partner, Nishith Desai Associates, concluded that APAII intends to build a high-quality angel investing ecosystem aligned with global standards—one that advances innovation, sound governance, informed investment practices, and a strong culture of collegiality among founders, investors, and ecosystem partners. “The initiative reflects the growing importance of professional standards and investor capability in strengthening early-stage capital markets,” he said.
APAII will announce its phased roadmap, program scope, and timelines in due course.
