N Chandrasekaran reverses exit decision, secures another 5-year term as Tata Sons Chairman
Tata Sons’ board approved his reappointment as Executive Chairman by a majority vote after Chandrasekaran agreed to reconsider his earlier decision not to seek another term.
N Chandrasekaran will continue as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons for another five years after reversing his earlier decision not to seek reappointment, Tata Sons said in a statement on Thursday. At its September 17 meeting, the board approved Chandrasekaran’s reappointment by a majority vote after he agreed to reconsider his August 12 decision not to offer himself for another term. His current tenure is due to expire in February 2027.
Tata Sons said Tata Trusts had unanimously backed his reappointment in July 2025, citing his stewardship of the group since 2017. The Tata Sons board then agreed in principle in September 2025 to give him another five-year term. However, the formal approval was deferred in February 2026 after the board failed to reach unanimity. The matter was discussed again in May and June but remained unresolved.
On September 3, the Nomination and Remuneration Committee of Tata Sons unanimously asked Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision and recommended his reappointment, citing his contribution to the group and its larger interests.
At the September 17 board meeting, Chandrasekaran agreed to stay on, following which the board approved his reappointment. The board also said it would initiate steps to comply with applicable Reserve Bank of India guidelines and seek guidance from the RBI, Tata Trusts and other stakeholders on the relevant compliance requirements. Chandrasekaran has led Tata Sons since 2017. Before taking over as chairman, he served as CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services.
