Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu calls Big Tech’s push to slow AI development unfair
Large language models (LLMs) are becoming a commodity, with too many models in the market and prices also falling, Vembu said on the sidelines of the Zoholics event in Chennai.
Sridhar Vembu, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of Zoho, said he views calls by global technology companies for a slowdown in AI development with “cynicism”.
"Big companies have the freedom to slow down but they cannot ask the entire industry to slow down. I view it cynically," said Vembu, adding that these companies want others to slow down so they can move faster and grow.

In the current industry landscape, one cannot meet valuation or profit motives if they slow down, he added.
Global tech companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have recently called for greater caution around frontier AI development amid escalating security concerns. At the same time, Anthropic is reportedly preparing to launch a new AI model ahead of an expected IPO, while OpenAI’s latest GPT-6 Astra model has gained momentum.
