AI jobs paradox: Tech roles shrink as chip factories hire more
AI is unexpectedly reshaping the job market. Software roles are under pressure, while chip plants and AI infrastructure are creating new manufacturing jobs.
AI is changing where the jobs are. For years, the technology sector was seen as the safest bet for high-growth employment. Now, the picture is more complicated. As artificial intelligence automates parts of white-collar work, some technology-linked roles are shrinking.
At the same time, the demand for chips, data centres and AI hardware is creating new jobs in manufacturing.
Fresh US labour market data reported by The Times of India shows the split. Employers added 162,000 workers in August, well above market expectations of 53,000.
The nationwide unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, pointing to a resilient labour market even as employment moved differently across sectors.
Technology hiring faces pressure
The pressure is particularly visible in white-collar technology work. The information sector, which includes many roles exposed to software automation and AI-led efficiency drives, lost 23,000 positions in August.
That does not mean technology jobs are disappearing altogether.
Tech firms are reassessing how many people they need for tasks that AI tools can support, accelerate or partly automate. AI systems can write code snippets, summarise documents, handle customer queries, process data and support internal operations.
For companies facing cost pressures, these capabilities can reduce the need for some entry-level or routine roles. Employers may increasingly prioritise workers with skills that complement AI rather than compete directly with it.
AI hardware is creating factory jobs
The employment picture looks different in manufacturing. Industrial manufacturing added 16,000 jobs in August, recovering from a multi-month low recorded in December 2025. The expansion of semiconductor manufacturing plants linked to AI infrastructure is one factor behind the rebound.
AI requires enormous computing power, which means more chips, servers and data centre facilities. Building and running that infrastructure also requires workers across fabrication, equipment maintenance, quality control, logistics, electrical systems, construction support and specialised production.
Many of these jobs sit outside the traditional office-based technology workforce, creating demand for technical skills in industrial settings.
Workers face a changing skills market
The same technology putting pressure on some roles is contributing to demand for others. A software support position may become less necessary as AI handles more routine tasks, while a technician at a chip facility could become more valuable as manufacturing capacity expands.
That makes reskilling increasingly important, particularly for workers willing to move between digital and industrial roles. Employment also grew outside technology. Hospitality and leisure added 62,000 jobs after two months of declines, while municipal public school employment recovered 42,000 positions following seasonal midsummer distortions.
AI is affecting jobs beyond coding and offices. Its demand for computing infrastructure is creating new opportunities in factories, supply chains, and technical workplaces.
