Alphabet raises capex to $205 billion as cloud demand grows
Alphabet has increased its 2026 AI infrastructure spending to as much as $205 billion as Google Cloud demand accelerates.
Alphabet is doubling down on the most expensive arms race in tech. The Google parent has raised its 2026 capital expenditure (capex) guidance to between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from its earlier estimate of $180 billion to $190 billion.
Driven by relentless demand for AI infrastructure, the new budget will fund the data centres, advanced chips, and raw computing power needed to fuel its AI future.
AI-driven cloud demand is accelerating investment
Alphabet's decision follows another strong quarter for Google Cloud, which continues to emerge as one of the company's fastest-growing businesses. During the April to June quarter, Google Cloud generated $24.8 billion in revenue, an 82% year-on-year increase, driven largely by enterprise demand for AI services.
Businesses are increasingly using Google Cloud to train AI models, deploy applications and manage large volumes of data. Overall, Alphabet reported $119.8 billion in revenue, while its advertising business remained resilient, generating $81.6 billion.
However, cloud computing is now playing an increasingly important role in the company's long-term growth strategy as AI adoption accelerates.
Why AI infrastructure requires massive investment
Building and operating advanced AI models requires enormous computing resources. Training large language models and serving millions of AI requests every day depends on thousands of high-performance chips, extensive networking equipment and large-scale data centres.
Capital expenditure, or capex, refers to long-term investments in assets such as servers, buildings and digital infrastructure. Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi said customer demand for AI computing continues to exceed the company's available capacity.
Although Alphabet has significantly expanded its infrastructure over the past three years, demand has grown even faster. The company also indicated that infrastructure spending could continue rising in 2027 as additional capacity comes online.
Investors balance AI growth with rising costs
While Alphabet's cloud performance impressed investors, the larger spending commitment sparked fresh questions about profitability. The company reported negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion during the quarter, reflecting the heavy investment required to expand AI infrastructure.
It also posted adjusted earnings per share of $2.85, slightly below analyst expectations. Following the results, Alphabet shares slipped in extended trading as investors assessed how quickly the company could generate returns from its record AI investments.
The AI race is becoming an infrastructure battle
Alphabet's latest spending plan underlines a broader shift across the technology industry. Companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic are all investing heavily in data centres, specialised AI chips and cloud infrastructure to support growing demand.
Google's Gemini AI models remain central to this strategy, with Chief Executive Sundar Pichai confirming that training has already begun for Gemini 4. As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, success will depend not only on building smarter models but also on owning the infrastructure capable of running them at scale. For Alphabet, that makes AI infrastructure one of its biggest long-term bets.
