Anthropic offers up to $50,000 in AI grants for rare disease research
Anthropic has launched an AI for Science programme offering up to $50,000 in Claude credits to support rare disease research projects.
Rare diseases often receive less research funding despite affecting millions of people worldwide. Anthropic hopes to change that by putting AI into the hands of researchers working on some of medicine's most complex challenges.
The company has announced its AI for Science Rare Disease Programme, offering eligible teams up to $50,000 in Claude AI credits over six months. Announced on July 20, 2026, the initiative aims to help researchers accelerate scientific discovery while building a broader community focused on applying AI to rare disease research.
Up to $50,000 in Claude AI credits
Selected teams will receive access to Anthropic's Claude models through credits worth up to $50,000. These credits can be used for tasks such as reviewing scientific literature, extracting insights from small datasets, generating research hypotheses and supporting other knowledge-intensive workflows.
Rather than replacing researchers, Claude is intended to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks, allowing scientists to focus more on experiments, analysis and clinical decision-making.
Two funding tracks for researchers and startups
The programme is divided into two tracks designed to support different stages of scientific innovation. The first focuses on basic research, encouraging collaborations between clinical researchers, patient advocacy organisations and data scientists to better understand the biological mechanisms behind rare diseases.
The second track seeks to reduce one of biotech's biggest bottlenecks by helping firms accelerate drug discovery and development. Anthropic says projects may include evaluating drug targets across multiple treatment approaches, identifying biomarkers, preparing regulatory documentation and exploring basket trials, where multiple therapies are tested under a single clinical trial framework.
Partners bring additional scientific expertise
Anthropic is also working with organisations that can strengthen research outcomes. One of the programme's early partners is the Monarch Initiative, whose resources include the DisMech library, Mondo Disease Ontology, and the Monarch Knowledge Graph. These tools can help researchers identify connections between diseases and generate new scientific hypotheses.
The company also highlighted existing collaborations where Claude is already supporting work in drug repurposing, genetic variant classification and regulatory research through organisations including Every Cure, the Centre for Population Genomics and the Violet Research Institute.

Applications are open now and will close on August 2, 2026, at 11:59 PM PST. Anthropic is encouraging applicants to submit focused proposals aligned with one of the two programme tracks and to share research outputs that could benefit the wider scientific community.

More than 300 million people worldwide are estimated to live with one of over 7,000 identified rare diseases, yet many conditions remain poorly understood due to limited patient data and fragmented research.
By lowering the cost of accessing advanced AI tools, Anthropic hopes to help researchers analyse evidence faster, uncover new biological insights and accelerate the development of future treatments. If successful, the initiative could demonstrate how generative AI can become a practical research partner in addressing some of healthcare's most challenging problems.
