ChatGPT Ads in India: What can brands do with them?
ChatGPT could change how Indian brands get discovered. Ads may shift the game from keyword targeting to recommendations shaped by AI conversations.
The next ad slot may not look like an ad slot at all. ChatGPT Ads are opening a new chapter for digital marketing in India.
According to industry reporting, ChatGPT Ads launched in India on August 27, 2026, with more than 50 brands taking part in the initial rollout. OpenAI later said advertisers could buy ChatGPT ads directly through Ads Manager across India from August 31.
For brands, the opportunity goes beyond placing sponsored messages inside an AI chat. Consumers are using these conversations to ask questions, compare products, set budgets and explain what they need. That gives marketers a different way to reach people while they are making decisions.
Why ChatGPT Ads matter for Indian brands
Search advertising has traditionally been built around keywords. Social advertising has focused on audiences, interests and behaviour. ChatGPT Ads add another layer: the context of a conversation. A user may not simply search for “best laptop under Rs 1 lakh”.
They might explain that they travel often, need long battery life, occasionally edit videos and want a lightweight device. That conversation gives an AI system more context about the problem the person is trying to solve. So, for startups creates an opportunity to appear when their products match a specific need.
A travel brand, bank, electronics company, edtech platform or beauty retailer could potentially reach consumers during these moments of consideration. The aim is to become relevant to the question rather than interrupt the browsing experience.
How brands can prepare for AI-led discovery
Brands will need product information that is clear, accurate and easy for AI systems to understand. They should explain what a product does, who it serves and which problem it solves. Comparisons, pricing and reliability also need to be communicated clearly.
OpenAI’s ad setup includes advertiser-provided “context hints”. These describe conversations or situations where a product may be relevant. Unlike exact-match keywords, they focus on the circumstances around a user’s need.
For Indian marketers, that changes the question from “What will people search?” to “When can our product be useful?” Ad copy will need to reflect that approach. Clear benefits and specific use cases can be more useful than broad slogans. Strong landing pages and transparent pricing can also help consumers take the next step.
What should marketers watch closely?
Performance will be an important test. Brands will need to measure clicks, conversions, customer acquisition costs and brand consideration. Early campaigns may therefore work best as learning exercises rather than simple media buys.
Paid visibility will also remain separate from organic discovery. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Brands therefore cannot rely only on advertising. Product pages, reviews, FAQs and trusted content will still matter. These assets can help AI systems understand what a brand offers and where it fits.
ChatGPT Ads are still an emerging format in India. Brands that combine advertising with useful content and accurate product information could have an advantage. In AI conversations, relevance may become more important than reach alone.
