Google Gemini hits 1 billion monthly users
Google says Gemini has crossed 1 billion monthly users, making it one of the world’s largest AI assistants alongside ChatGPT and Meta AI.
Google has another billion-user product. The company says the Gemini app has passed 1 billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in Google’s history. Announced on 11 August 2026, the milestone shows how quickly AI assistants are moving from experimental tools to everyday digital services.
Google says Gemini is being used for voice conversations, schoolwork, creative projects, real-time problem-solving, and actions across apps.
Why the 1 billion mark matters
One billion monthly users is more than a headline number. It suggests Gemini is becoming a major layer across Google’s ecosystem, particularly on Android, where the assistant can perform actions across more than 40 popular apps.
That gives Google a distribution advantage few AI companies can match. Gemini can reach users through Android, Search, Workspace and Chrome, rather than relying entirely on a standalone app. The usage data also offers a glimpse into how people are interacting with AI.
Google says 63% of Gemini users now talk directly to the assistant, highlighting the growing role of voice. One in five Gemini Live interactions also go beyond voice, with users relying on live camera feeds and screen sharing for practical assistance.
Education is another major use case. Google says 38% of school-related requests include an attachment, suggesting students are using documents, images and other materials alongside their questions.
Creativity is driving more AI use
Gemini's growth is not limited to text-based conversations. Google says the app now generates more than 150 million images every day. Its tools increasingly combine image, video and audio capabilities, giving users more ways to create content from a single platform.
This could be particularly useful for small businesses and independent creators. AI-generated visuals can help with marketing campaigns, product presentations and social media content without requiring a large creative team.
Gemini's presence in Apple's ecosystem is also growing. Google says the app has more than 100 million active users on iOS, showing that its reach extends beyond Android. On macOS, Google says power users prompt roughly twice as often as users on other surfaces, pointing to heavier use among professionals and creators.

The billion-user AI race
Gemini's milestone puts Google directly into competition with other AI assistants operating at massive scale.
OpenAI's ChatGPT reportedly became the fastest mobile app to reach 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026, according to Sensor Tower. Its data also showed that ChatGPT, Gemini and DeepSeek accounted for nearly 90% of total time spent across AI assistant apps during the first quarter of 2026.
Meta AI has also reached the billion-user mark. In May 2025, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Meta AI had 1 billion monthly active users across the company's apps, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The competitive landscape is therefore becoming more crowded. ChatGPT has established itself as a major standalone AI assistant; Meta AI benefits from social platforms, while Gemini can draw on Google's enormous product ecosystem.
Claude, DeepSeek and Microsoft Copilot remain important competitors, although they have not all reported 1 billion monthly users.
What Google needs to prove next
For Google, the next challenge is not simply adding more users. It needs to make Gemini useful, reliable and easy to integrate into everyday digital tasks.
The company has described its ambition as making Gemini more personal, proactive and capable. If that strategy works, the assistant could become less like a standalone chatbot and more like an AI interface connecting users with the services they already use.
