Google: Digital ads generated Rs 49,731 crore for MSMEs in 2025
Google report says digital ads generated Rs 49,731 crore for MSMEs in 2025, with ROI gains and growth potential despite skill and budget gaps.
Clicks are turning into cash for India’s small businesses. A new Google-backed study estimates that digital advertising by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) generated Rs 49,731 crore in economy-wide output during 2025.
The report also estimates that these activities contributed Rs 32,307 crore in gross value added and generated around Rs 6,534 crore in GST collections, up from Rs 5,000 crore in 2024. This shows the increasing impact of digital platforms on India's growing business ecosystem.
Let's take a closer look at this recent Google study!
What the study found
The report, titled The Google Dividend: Measuring Digital Commerce's Contribution to India's Economic Future, was produced through research led by Google and the India SME Forum, with technical inputs from Deloitte.
It combines economic modelling with a survey of 3,249 MSMEs conducted in June 2026. Around 72% of respondents were micro enterprises, while more than half were located in Tier II and Tier III cities. The report also projects that India's e-commerce market could reach $250 billion by 2030 as internet adoption, digital payments and AI-powered commerce continue to expand across the country.
Digital advertising is delivering measurable results
The survey found that businesses using digital advertising are seeing clear commercial benefits. Nearly 60% of respondents reported double-digit revenue growth, while 66% said digital marketing helped them reach new markets.
Around 58% experienced better customer acquisition, and 78% reported lower customer acquisition costs, with 43% reducing these costs by as much as 25%. More than half of the businesses surveyed said they earned returns of two to three times their advertising spend, while the strongest performers reported returns of up to five times.
In addition, over 75% of respondents said that more than 10% of their sales now come from customers acquired through digital channels.
Challenges remain despite growing adoption
Despite the positive results, digital adoption among MSMEs remains relatively low. The report estimates that only 13% of MSMEs currently use digital marketing. Many businesses continue to face challenges in selecting suitable tools, implementing digital technologies and building the skills needed to use AI effectively.
While AI has the potential to increase profitability by 30 to 35%, businesses cite skill shortages, limited budgets and organisational readiness as major barriers to adoption.

A growing opportunity for Indian businesses
The report also highlights India's expanding vernacular internet, with around 98% of internet users consuming content in Indic languages. This creates significant opportunities for businesses to connect with customers through regional language advertising.
For MSMEs, the findings reinforce a clear message. Consistent digital advertising, combined with basic analytics, regional content and carefully selected AI tools, can improve customer reach, increase sales and strengthen long-term business growth.
As India's digital economy continues to expand, businesses that invest early in digital marketing are likely to be better positioned to compete in an increasingly connected marketplace.
