IIT Bombay underwater robot team wins big at RoboSub 2026
IIT Bombay’s AUV-IITB won two first-place awards at RoboSub 2026 in California, competing against 58 teams from nine countries.
A student-built robot from Mumbai has made waves in California. The IIT Bombay underwater robot team, AUV-IITB, delivered a strong international performance at RoboSub 2026, winning first place in the Overall Wildcard Challenge and the Overall Website Evaluation.
The competition, held from July 11 to 16 at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine, California, brought together 58 teams from nine countries. The 29th edition of RoboSub tested autonomous underwater vehicles, or AUVs, in tasks inspired by real-world maritime needs.
These included navigation, object detection, pipeline tracking and manipulation of underwater objects. In simple terms, the robots had to make decisions and complete missions underwater without direct human control.
What made the RoboSub 2026 performance stand out
According to the results, AUV-IITB’s achievements went beyond two category wins. The team finished fifth in the Global Autonomy Challenge, second in the MathWorks Simulation Challenge, and tied for third in Design Documentation. It also secured third place for the Technical Design Report.
The team competed with its flagship vehicle, Matsya 7, alongside Mini Matsya, a newer compact vehicle. IIT Bombay said the two vehicles operated in parallel, allowing the team to attempt complex underwater tasks with improved speed and accuracy. This dual-vehicle approach was among the highlights of the team’s 2026 campaign.
Matsya 7 is part of a long-running student engineering effort at IIT Bombay. The AUV-IITB team has built and improved underwater vehicles over the years, combining mechanical design, electronics, software, controls and computer vision. Computer vision helps the robot identify and respond to objects or markers underwater, where visibility and movement can be challenging.

Why RoboSub matters for student innovation
RoboSub is not just a race between robots. It is a systems engineering competition where student teams design, build, test and refine vehicles for conditions that resemble challenges in the underwater maritime industry. These challenges can be relevant to ocean exploration, inspection, disaster response and harbour operations.
The 2026 event featured teams from Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, Poland, Singapore, Turkey and the United States. Competing in such a field gives students exposure to global engineering standards and practical problem-solving outside the classroom.
For IIT Bombay, the result strengthens its position in student-led robotics and autonomous systems. For India’s technology ecosystem, it is another reminder that university teams can build competitive hardware and software for difficult environments. AUV-IITB’s RoboSub 2026 showing reflects months of design work, testing and teamwork, ending in a performance that stood out on a global stage.
