Meta AI glasses could go camera-free with privacy-focused Luna
Meta AI glasses may soon get a camera-free version, reportedly codenamed Luna, shifting attention from recording to voice-led AI features and privacy-conscious wearable tech.
Meta is reportedly working on a new pair of smart glasses, internally codenamed Luna, that could remove one of the category’s most debated features: the camera.
Instead, the glasses are expected to focus on voice-based AI, allowing users to interact with Meta AI without capturing photos or videos.
The reported move would mark a different direction from Meta’s existing Ray-Ban smart glasses, which combine hands-free recording with AI features that can understand what the wearer is seeing. Luna could put more emphasis on everyday assistance and make the absence of a camera part of its appeal.
Why take the camera out?
Cameras on smart glasses have long raised a basic privacy concern: people nearby may not know when they are being recorded. Meta’s current glasses use a capture light to indicate when recording is taking place.
But a camera worn on someone’s face can still feel intrusive in places such as schools, workplaces and public spaces. Removing the camera could reduce some of that discomfort.
The trade-off is that Luna would lose several capabilities that make camera-equipped glasses useful. Users would not be able to take photos or videos, while AI would also lose the ability to analyse the wearer’s surroundings visually.
A voice assistant built into your glasses
According to reports, Luna may feature six microphones and a side button that lets users quickly speak to Meta AI.
That could turn the glasses into an always-available audio assistant. Users could ask questions, set reminders, take calls, listen to responses or get quick information without reaching for their phones.
The glasses are also expected to retain speaker-based audio features similar to Meta’s current models. That could allow users to handle calls, music, messages and AI responses without needing a camera.
What users give up
The biggest question is whether people will find voice-led AI useful enough without visual capabilities.
Cameras allow smart glasses to capture moments and understand the environment around the wearer, making some AI features more powerful. Luna would instead depend mainly on voice input and audio output.
That limitation could also be its selling point. People who want quick access to AI but are uncomfortable wearing a camera may find a camera-free design easier to use. It could also make the glasses more suitable for offices, classrooms and other environments where cameras can be restricted.
A different direction for smart glasses
If Luna launches, it could point to two different directions for AI eyewear. One focuses on cameras, displays and visual AI. The other puts voice assistance, privacy and everyday convenience first.
A camera-free model would not necessarily replace Meta's existing glasses. It could instead expand the audience for AI wearables.
The bigger test will be whether voice-based AI can offer enough value on its own, and whether users consider giving up the camera a worthwhile trade-off for greater privacy.
