Why are US schools suddenly pushing back against AI?
US schools AI rules are tightening as Los Angeles blocks tools such as ChatGPT and Claude on district devices, reflecting concerns over learning, screen time and responsible use.
AI entered classrooms faster than many schools expected. Now, some are starting to hit the brakes.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has blocked students from accessing generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and similar platforms on district-issued laptops and tablets for the 2026-27 school year.
The restriction covers students across all grades, making it broader than some other school policies in the US. But the move is less about rejecting AI and more about giving schools time to work out where the technology belongs in education.
The question is becoming harder to ignore: if AI can write an essay or solve a problem in seconds, how do schools make sure students still learn how to do those things themselves?
Los Angeles takes a cautious approach
Los Angeles Unified, the second-largest public school district in the US, has introduced the restriction while reviewing how AI should be used in classrooms. The block applies mainly to school-managed devices and district profiles.
The district uses web-filtering systems to restrict websites and apps categorised as AI tools on school Chromebooks and tablets. These systems can also monitor usage and screen time. It is not a blanket ban on AI outside the school environment.
Students can still access such tools on personal devices outside the district network. Teachers can also use AI for certain educational purposes.
At the same time, the district is developing an AI curriculum aimed at teaching students how the technology works and how to use it responsibly. That makes the policy closer to a controlled pause than a complete rejection of AI.
The worry is what students might stop learning
The concerns behind the restrictions are not necessarily about AI being useless. Generative AI can help students brainstorm, organise information and understand difficult subjects. But educators worry that easy access to instant answers could remove some of the effort that makes learning effective.
If students rely on AI before trying to form an argument, write an answer or solve a problem themselves, they may get the result without developing the underlying skill. Parents have also raised concerns about screen time and whether excessive technology use could affect curiosity and cognitive development.
Accuracy presents another challenge. AI systems can produce convincing answers that are wrong. Younger students may not yet have the knowledge or critical thinking skills needed to recognise those mistakes. Los Angeles is not alone in wrestling with the issue.
New York City has also announced a one-year restriction on generative AI for students through eighth grade, while allowing some monitored AI literacy activities for older students. The approaches differ, but the dilemma is similar.
Schools have to prepare children for a world where AI will be everywhere without allowing it to replace the thinking, writing and problem-solving skills students are there to develop.
