Hyundai Alcazar gets new 1.5L turbo petrol engine, bookings open
Other than the new turbocharged petrol engine, Hyundai Alcazar has also gained few additional features and a minute cosmetic update.
With the phase two of BS6 kicking in from April 1, 2023, onwards, OEMs are currently on a war footing to update their lineup as per new emission norms. Also known as real drive emission (RDE) norms, the new standards will require every new vehicle to be equipped with Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS).
To comply with the above rules, Hyundai will be discontinuing the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine in Alcazar. The Korean carmaker will replace this motor with a smaller 1.5-litre GDI turbocharged petrol unit, which is more potent than its predecessor.
New 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine
The new 1.5-litre power plant pumps out 158 bhp and 253 Nm of peak torque, thus producing an excess of 1 bhp and 61 Nm over the outgoing 2.0-litre engine. Bookings for the updated Alcazar are now open, and interested buyers can book one at a token amount of Rs 25,000. Hyundai is yet to officially announce prices for the updated Alcazar.
New 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine from Hyundai
This 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor will make its way to the new generation Hyundai Verna slated to make its debut on March 21, and other models from Hyundai and Kia like Creta, Seltos and Carens. This indicates that both Korean sister brands are likely to pull the plug on the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engines as well.
Along with being RDE complaint, the new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is also compatible with E20 ethanol-blended fuel. This motor will be available with two transmission options – a six-speed manual and a new 7-speed DCT replacing the six-speed torque convertor automatic unit in the outgoing 2.0-litre unit.
Besides power and torque output, the new engine has also gained fuel efficiency over the older 2.0-litre petrol motor. Hyundai claims this turbocharged engine offers a fuel efficiency of 17.5 kmpl with the manual gearbox and 18 kmpl with the automatic transmission. The discontinued petrol mill returned claimed fuel efficiency figures of 14.5 kmpl and 14.2 kmpl with manual and automatic gearboxes, respectively.

Hyundai will continue to offer the 1.5-litre CRDi diesel engine option with Alcazar. This motor churns out 114 bhp and 250 NM of peak torque. Transmission duties on the oil burner will be carried out by a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque convertor automatic option.
Other updates
Apart from a new engine, Hyundai has also added a few convenience and safety features to Alcaazar. The SUV receives a new-look grille and new puddle lamps in higher variants whereas the idle engine stop/start system is now a standard feature in the package, resulting in better fuel economy.

Alcazar’s safety suite was upgraded in the last update, which included standard fitments like six airbags, including side and curtain airbags across all variants. Other features on offer include tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), all-wheel disc brakes, a 360-degree camera with a blind view monitor, and electronic stability control (ESC).
