Target in India expands strategic role as global capability hub, says Andrea Zimmerman
Target's Bengaluru centre employs around 5,700 professionals with multidisciplinary capabilities spanning technology, merchandising, store design, marketing, finance, and operations.
US retail giant Target is steadily expanding the strategic role of its India operations, with its Bengaluru centre evolving beyond a traditional back-office function into a deeply integrated part of the company's global business, according to Andrea Zimmerman, Senior Vice President and President, Target in India.
Speaking about the company's India operations, Zimmerman said Target in India has grown significantly over the past 21 years, both in terms of workforce and the value it delivers to the global organisation.
"Target is a US retailer that generated $105 billion in net sales in 2025 and operates more than 2,000 stores across all 50 US states with over 400,000 team members. We operate one very special, highly integrated second headquarters, and that is Target in India right here in Bengaluru," Zimmerman said.
She said the Bengaluru centre employs around 5,700 professionals with multidisciplinary capabilities spanning technology, merchandising, store design, marketing, finance, and operations.
"We do not operate as a back office removed from headquarters. We operate as a highly integrated global team," she said, adding that technology accounts for about 40% of the India workforce, while the remaining employees support functions across the retailer's value chain.
Zimmerman noted that many leaders in both India and the United States manage global teams, reflecting the increasing responsibility shouldered by the India organisation.
Highlighting the company's talent development initiatives, she said Target's apprenticeship programme has emerged as an important hiring pipeline, with nearly 35% of apprentices transitioning into full-time roles.
She also emphasised that the India centre's contribution has steadily expanded beyond workforce growth.
"Target in India's story has never been just about growing numbers and headcount. It has been about continually increasing value and impact," Zimmerman said.
She pointed out that around 80% of Target's store remodels are designed and delivered by teams based in India, alongside best-in-class marketing capabilities and a strong technology organisation.
"My aim is to continue pushing the boundaries, growing capabilities and increasing the impact that Target in India is making on Target's overall strategy," Zimmerman said.
