No one on the surface of the earth doubts the future of the mobile technology. Having crossed a milestone already, where businesses could ignore mobile users a couple of years ago, today, if your business isn't mobile ready, you're in trouble!

Our lives revolve around smartphones and mobile applications today. Whether it’s about waking up in the morning, navigate through new routes or book a movie date, there's no task that we don’t need mobile applications for. Mobile apps have really made everything just a click away!

Mobile Applications basically are software applications that are designed to run on smartphones, tablets and other smart devices and make our daily activities really easy.

Pretty upfront? Well, it actually isn’t.

How about rewinding back a few years and see how it all began? How apps went through a dramatic change and development and became such a vital part of our lives?

Well, the first ever public cellular call was done on April 3, 1973, by Martin Cooper of Motorola in a promotional show in New York, America. However, it took about additional 10 years of extensive R&D, before this phone could actually rule the marketplace.

The Evolution of the Mobile Phones:

Psion EPOC: Apps first came with Psion’s series of handheld computers in the early 90s. EPOC was programmed in open programming language and allowed its users to make their own applications, which later formed the foundation of the Symbian operating system.

Palm OS: Palm arose as a major opposition to Psion in the PDA market with the Palm Pilot, its low-priced, lesser functionality range of PDAs.

Wireless Markup Language: The Wireless Markup Language was based on XML, which was developed in the late 90s for use in Wireless Application Protocol enabled devices by the WAP Forum.

Symbian: Symbian grew from the Psion EPOC operating system. Initially developed by Symbian Ltd – the operating system was nearly universal. It was Nokia actually, that drove the development of Symbian OS. The platform S60 was used on almost all Nokia handsets along with some LG and Samsung ones. The use of diverse, fragmented platforms, each with their own API, shows that there was no standard market place for apps.

The incompatibility of applications across diverse platforms and the incompetence to completely move to open source are perhaps what declared the death-knell for Symbian. Moreover, there were also issues with malware.

Nokia 808 PureView, the last Symbian smartphone ran the Nokia Belle updates using C++. But, this award winning phone wasn’t enough to extend Nokia’s peak success. Eventually, Symbian moved to OS, which is now license-only.

And this brings us to the present day Operating Systems:

Android: Based on Linux Kernel, Android started its life as a proposed advance operating system for digital cameras, until the company realized that their market was limited, as compared to that of the mobile phones in 2007. Yet soon Google faced a copyright infringement suit from Oracle for the Java compatible nature of the Android APIs.

iOS: Apple iOS set high standards for the new generation of smartphones when it released the first iPhone in 2007, with a touchscreen and direct manipulation interface. But, the iOS lineage started with NeXTSTEP, an object oriented multitasking operating system that was also responsible for developing world’s first web browser.

Emergence of the Application Houses

Applications in Symbian smartphones came as Features. Be it messaging apps, games or settings, it all were named as features of the phone. Though it seemed next to perfect at that moment, there soon arose a demand for third party apps, which could not be installed in these phones.

This is where the newer operating systems: Android and iOS came in with their respective application houses: Play Store and App Store.

These application houses made lives really easy by allowing downloading and installing any third party application that best suits the user. It is worth knowing that about 30-40% of the mobile applications available on these application houses are outsourced to India.

Outsourcing Mobile Development in India

One of the most striking factors that fascinate companies to outsource software projects to India is that the cost that is reduced to almost 30%, with access to world-class software engineers. It is not an option, but a smart decision. Outsourcing allows organizations to concentrate on their core issues. There are several processes within the SDLC. By outsourcing some of the least necessary processes to India, the control and profits can really mount up.
