An Opportunist Will Refine The Dignity Of Indian Legal System

The main objective of case brief is to pull out the important information for legal writing.

LawBriefs.in is a unique legal services platform that aims to provide a complete legal database of case-briefs of Indian judgements to any individual allied with the legal system. The main objective of case brief is to pull out the important information for legal writing. One may need a brief of cases while one performs research or writing assignments for one’s legal research or to argue in a court. In this context, case briefing helps one to identify important information that one will need from cases to complete one's legal analysis and arguments. The briefs available at Law Briefs are divided into various variables in order to have the understanding of the judgment apter.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR TEAM:

I, Aditya Gor, am pursuing my undergraduate law from Gujarat National Law University- Gandhinagar (Gujarat). The way in which the law operates/commands/governs the members of an independent political society is what inspired me to pursue my education in the legal field.

The team at Law Briefs consists of law experts and law students well versed with all the aspects of the law. Other than people from the legal background, our team also includes people pursuing professional courses such as Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, and others. We also have a professional IT guy who looks into various technical aspects of the website.

WHAT MADE YOU INITIATE THIS START-UP?

I remember it was the second semester of law school studies. We had our End semester exams going on. At that time, I met with an accident which fractured my left hand. I still chose to appear for my examination. Because of the fracture and the medication which I was taking at that time, it was not possible for me to go through the entire text of the judgement in a short period of time. I then looked for the briefs of those judgements in various available sources ranging from books written by renowned authors in the field of law to a mere Google search. At the first instance, I did not find brief for all the judgement I was looking for.

Though I did find briefs of certain landmark judgements but to my surprise, instead of getting my concepts clear, I became more confused after reading the brief. I felt as if these briefs lacked the essential element of structure in it. Thus came, the idea of structuring the briefs in rational and systematic manner. I shared this idea with my few batchmates of mine, and slowly we were a team of 12 people who agreed to work in the same direction. Earlier we thought of providing briefs through a medium of an online blog but then subsequently one of the members proposed benefits of having a website and thus a consensus to the same was obtained.

HOW IS LAWBRIEFS DISRUPTING THE OLD METHOD OF READING JUDGEMENTS?

Law Briefs is a strategy which will break the traditional method of understanding judgements by reading it over and over again to transform the experience of persons allied with the realm of law. Through Law Briefs, we are trying to bring a new way of interpreting and understanding the judgement and thus achieving the objective of understanding law more aptly. The old method of understanding law includes reading the entire text of judgment once, understanding the ratio laid down by the judge, suspecting the points of the law argued from both the sides. But by Law Briefs, understanding law and interpreting judgements become much more efficient and simple. Law Briefs will relieve the pain of the readers of going through the entire text of the judgement by presenting the briefs of the judgement in a scientific manner; Law Briefs will try to explain the ratio of the judgement by using various proven techniques like mind-mapping tools, flow-charts, diagrams, etc.; and most importantly, Law Briefs will divide the entire judgement into various variables which will make the understanding clear and precise.

In the past, the briefs would be submitted as paperwork, and because these were anything but brief, the system would get swamped by paperwork over time, and the truth would easily get obscured in a forest of documents. Our passion includes renewing the legal industry to meet the needs of the reader of the judgement.

WHAT MAKES LAWBRIEFS UNIQUE?

As a law student, legal practitioner or an academician, reading judgements is time-consuming, tiring and onerous. With increasing reliance and importance of case briefs, there does not exist any online resource in India which provides case brief of judgments in a systematic and rational manner. In order to have better understanding of the topic, to save time and efforts of the readers, to follow the saying of working smart before working hard, to make referencing easy, to achieve precision, and to provide a handy guide to any person associated with law, it is necessary that there exists a single platform which deals with all relevant case brief of the Indian judgements. Law Briefs presents the judgements in a systematic way and uses two of the proven scientific methods- Story Telling format and Mind Mapping Tools.

YOU HAVE RECEIVED BEST START IN DOMAIN OF LAW PRIZE- SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE ABOUT THE EVENT

We were a team of three members who participated in this prestigious event organised by Gujarat National Law University- Gandhinagar. There were six teams from across different parts of India who were selected to make a final presentation before the learned 5 Judge Jury panel. We were fortunate enough to leave a great impression about the benefits that Law Briefs serve to its readers which I believe act majorly in receiving the Best Start-Up prize. Along with it, the uniqueness of the idea was also appreciated by the judges who went on to say that “Law Briefs is the next big thing in law/ Law Briefs is the next unicorn of legal industry.”

WHERE DO YOU SEE LAWBRIEFS IN NEXT 5 YEARS?

With the increasing number of Law Graduates every year in the country, our plan is to expand our outreach to 200+ cities and various colleges across India. We also aim at creating the biggest database of briefs of Indian judgements which can be accessed through both desktop website and a mobile application.

HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY FUNDING FROM VENTURE CAPITALISTS? DO YOU HAVE ANYONE TO MENTOR YOU IN THIS INITIATIVE OF YOURS?

No, till today Law Briefs is effectively functioning from the capital brought in by the founder. But since we are expanding ourselves, we look forward to grabbing the benefits of funding. With regards to mentorship, we are proud to be mentored by esteemed members of GNLU Incubation Centre. Further, I believe that it is the hard work of the Law briefs team which will definitely direct us to the path of success.

FINAL QUESTION, WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU IS THE FUTURE OF LAW AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP?

Gone are the days when we used to consider Legal Entrepreneurship as a failed career choice. In today’s present scenario it is essential that legal industry starts thinking from the entrepreneurial blend of mind. According to me, entrepreneurship means trying out different things in a similar way or similar things in a different way; and that’s what exactly I believe the legal industry requires today. It is not the time for us to settle with the things already available, but rather we should always strive for innovative techniques.
