It’s a well-known fact that Delhi holds a special place in the hearts of celebrity couple Gauri and Shah Rukh Khan. It is, after all, the place where they were born, gew up, and met each other.

Shah Rukh Khan, who is also popularly known as SRK, King Khan or the Badshaah of Bollywood, has had a journey that is nothing short of inspirational. The megastar started out in Bollywood without any background in the industry a little over three decades ago, making an irrefutable mark on Indian films with nothing but his sheer talent and ability to win crowds over.

Among his many roles, he is possibly most loved for his iconic portrayal of Raj in the cult hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), one of the most successful Indian films in history. The film established SRK as the king of romance in Bollywood and as of 2019, over 24 years after its first release, it was still being shown at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai.

Given Gauri and Shah Rukh Khan’s remarkable journeys, it is understandable then that their home in New Delhi, is an emotional abode, with a design sensibility that reflects its uniquely personal approach to design. Nestled in the elegant South Delhi neighborhood of Panchsheel Park, the Khan Delhi residence reflects SRK and Gauri’s journey - as a couple, and then as a family. It brims with personal keepsakes and collectibles from their travels around the world.

Spread over two floors, the home evokes a feeling of warmth, especially through the family pictures of the couple with their children along with those with other family members sprinkled across the home. Being a perfectionist, lighting is important to Gauri, and many of the artefacts, photos, and other collectibles are beautifully lit, almost resembling a very personal art gallery.

Gauri’s curatorial style combines the old with the new to evoke memories, and most of the collectibles are “my firsts”, as she describes.

The most telling design element in the Khan’s Delhi residence is its deeply personal aesthetic that captures the family’s many memories over the years. Photographs and knick-knacks line a wall in the master bedroom.

These include Aryan’s first badminton racket; Suhana’s make-up brushes and the butterflies she collected; AbRam’s first birthday gift of an exquisite silver mirror and comb; and even original negatives of Shah Rukh Khan’s favourite film.

Another spectacularly appointed wall is home to handmade cards exchanged by Shah Rukh and Gauri during their early days of courtship.
