One of the biggest advantages of the OTT platforms, is that when you have no plans or if your plans fall through, they work as a great rescue measure. Not only do they have the ability to take you into a world of your own, but they also help you unwind.
While many people may be taking a break or getting away for the long weekend, for those of you who have nothing much to do, here are some web series that you can catch up on
1. Bard of Blood (Netflix)
Actor Emraan Hashmi starring ‘Bard of Blood’ is the new favourite spy thriller on Netflix.
This seven-episode series revolves around an ex-RAW agent, who is pulled back into the world of espionage, murder, and betrayal at Baluchistan, Pakistan.
2. Spy (Netflix)
The Netflix web series Spy profiles the life and times of Eli Cohen, Mossad’s top spy, who was executed in 1965 in Damascus, Syria after being caught by the Syrian authorities.
A six-episode series, Spy is believed to have been inspired by real-life incidents. It also has the influence of the French book by Uri Daan and Yeshayahu Ben Porat - The Spy who came from Israel. Sacha Baron Cohen as Eli Cohen exudes the cunningness, ruthlessness and meticulousness of the spy who rose to the top ranks in the Syrian government without being detected and passed on important intel for Israel’s war against Syria. Spy weaves a web of ingenuity and intrigue, giving us both thrills and spills.
It also leaves us with a tinge of sadness in knowing that Cohen’s remains were never handed over to his kin by Syria.
3. Unbelievable (Netflix)
This Netflix series has been the talk of town. The miniseries, Unbelievable is series based on a series of rapes that happened in Colorado and Washington. Taken from a long-form article written by T Christian Miller, ProPublica and Ken Armstrong for propublica.org, it also revolves around the ingenuity of the two female detectives who work tirelessly to identify the serial rapist, despite different challenges including lack of communication among police officials.
The Los Angeles Times quoted: "It also offers one of the most revolutionary depictions of rape and its aftermath in the history of the small screen, showing little interest in the attacker or his motivations and instead focusing relentlessly on the detectives who are determined to stop a criminal."
4. The Family Man (Amazon Prime)
The Family Man has been something that everyone has been raving about. It is one of the must-watch series of the season. The seven-episode long series is another interesting spy thriller. As the name implies, the show is built pretty much around the usual tropes of a spy thriller but with a refreshing addition in the form of some well-timed comedy.
An element that actor Manoj Bajpayee has no trouble dealing with as his character Srikant navigates through the length and breadth of the plot, engaging in occasional banter with his children and handling urgent matters at work. Without giving away any spoilers, we can say that the villain is the most astute of them all, as he plans a jihad that is terrifying and horrific.
5. The Office - Season 2 (Hotstar)
The Indian adaptation of the BBC classic of the same name, the show depicts the drudgery of the regular 9 to 5 job. While not up to the standards to the BBC original, Hotstar’s The Office is a 13-episode long series, that can be a light entertainment for the weekend.
The second season is much more watchable than the first, with the entry of comedienne Mallika Dua, whose subtle humour has us laughing and asking for more.
