Sip the remedy

Cough or depression, Dr.Nidhi Maheshwari, an Ayurvedic expert, and founder of Ishanherbotech International tells YourStory that her range of herbal tea products bring remedy from modern diseases right into your morning cuppa.

My story

Cleopatra would have loved it- an anti-aging tea. There is an herbal tea for slimming also. No wonder, the founder of Ishanherbotech International and producer of a range of such herbal tea products, Nidhi Maheshwari, can easily pass off as a college student. That is, until you meet her 12 year old kid Ishan. Companies in anti-aging cream business, cough syrups, depressants, and fitness centres need to be watchful of this silent revolution as Nidhi Maheshwari churns out magic potions out of herbs and spices in her Noida laboratory.

Prod her on the competition and Nidhi laughs uncontrollably: "Who me? Let me first establish my own brand. I am still retailing it through big chains under their in-house brand name." On a more serious note she adds that there have been extreme cases of trying to patent her herbal products in US and she will soon launch her own brand. Quiz her about non-conventional career choice and she chuckles up like a child. "I was always fascinated with Ayurveda. As destiny would have it, i got married in a family where my father-in-law had a huge mandi of herbs and spices in Agra," says Nidhi, who pursued specialised study in Ayurveda and later became head of department of a bio-medical college, Lyod Institute of Management and Technology.

She also served as a research scientist in AIIMS and was part of the select research team sent from India to Japan  Her mother, looking at her daughter with pride, joins in: "She values commitment. If she decides to do something, she excels in it." Indeed, it has been one aspiring journey as she worked on her first order in 2002, after getting an advance from a US buyer. "Those were the days of trepidation mixed with an unbridled joy as I strove hard to balance my job, family and, worked on the Ayurvedic formulations in my spare time. Nobody gave me an outside chance, but I held my ground and started developing a range of herbal products. In 2004, as business increased, I quit the job because I believe you can't be in two boats at one time," confides Nidhi.

Since then she has been exporting rare herbal products and ayurvedic formulations and her business has grown northwards. Repeat clientele has been the icing on the cake- her first client still swears by her customised formulation for him. "I guess that's the key to my success- the approach to provide medicinal formulations in most natural way for modern diseases such as stress, obesity, diabetes, infecting the present day people." Now, the formulation expert is looking for a perfect marketing recipe to launch her own brand and reach out to millions of people in both India and abroad.
