Abhishek Arora & Tanvir Alam, NCRHUNT

Saturday August 01, 2009 , 5 min Read

Consulting the yellow pages every time you need a particular service is really not adequate. Oftentimes the information on the net also does not suffice; and we have nowhere to turn to. Two young Entrepreneurs decided that they would provide the public with something which actually works and supports not just people but their lifestyles. Abhishek Arora & Tanvir Alam established NCRHUNT – City based local search engine with map support in September of 2008.

Abhishek Arora elaborates on their venture saying “Ncrhunt is a city based local search engine with map support. It provides search functionality for over 50 categories like restaurant, bars, retail shops, hotels, cinema, sports, hospitals, doctors, automobiles, real estate etc. Currently it provides search functionality in NCR region and Mumbai. But soon we plan to expand to other categories.”

”We also host blogs on city life styles. Our differentiating point is our quality search along with map support. We also have provision where users can add listing on our search engine free of cost. This is separate from our advertisement service. We constantly improve our search service. We plan to monetize our advertisement service and also through lead conversion in form of hotel bookings, maid selection, booking of cabs etc.”

“Each and every person living in Mumbai and NCR region can benefit from it. The service is free of charge. They can also contribute to the data collected by us by adding listings. The scope of our organization is huge. We plan to expand to each and every city in India in future.”

With Quality search service and map support their search engine is a bit off the beaten track. They are planning to expand their search service to other cities and combine the offline and online models. They are also hunting for people in different cities to help in updating and collecting data as well as forming partnerships with restaurants etc for lead conversions.

Abhishek was attracted to the concept of working for himself for a long time. He says “Working in the industry wasn’t giving me much happiness because I wasn’t getting to do the work which I always loved since my graduation day’s i.e search engines. After working in a startup I really got encouraged to start something on my own. My strong skills in search engines helped me to start NCRHUNT”.

It was difficult for the idea to take off. Abhishek had to search very hard for support and eventually found it within himself. He says “I always had the idea in my mind and was looking for friends to work with me. No one was too excited about it or found it to be technically feasible. So the idea was always in the air. It really took a lot of self motivation to start coding on the project on my own. Apart from skill self belief is very much required in starting a project.”

His excitement got the better of him, and he made a few amateur mistakes. In his hurry to finish his work he made some technical blunders in the code as well as in the marketing techniques that cost him valuable time.

His venture was entirely self-funded. Thus it was a big achievement for him and a great confidence boost when his site traffic rose to 250 hits on a single day and accumulated 510 page views.

He says “Many big players (Search Engine) have approached us for the data but deals couldn’t get through as it was not on mutually acceptable terms. Also Ncrhunt has been extensively covered by people in blogs.”

He also spoke about his current situation where he is till working a 9 to 5 but biding his time for the correct moment, he says “I am working on NCRHUNT with my regular job. I am just waiting for the right time to quit my regular job. I believe that correct timing is very essential for deciding to call it quits. Moreover working in the industry helps you to build contacts and keeps you updated with the latest technology.”

We asked him what makes him stay rooted to his goals in the face of such adversities, and he replies simply saying “Satisfaction. I really want to do work which give me inner happiness. It’s not just about money. Taking your work to some height really gives you confidence for the rest of life. To do something which you really love and find some sort of success in it gives you plenty of confidence.”

He has learnt many lessons in a very short period of time. His experiences have made him wiser thus advises others saying “Do not jump in a venture just for the sake of earning money. Do work which you can do without feeling bored. Money will follow good work. Don’t run for the sake of money.”

Yourstory wishes Abhishek and NCRHUNT the best at achieving all his entrepreneurial goals and thanks him for sharing his inspirational story with us.
