Mukul Somany recognised as 'Entrepreneur of the year'

Mr. Mukul Somany, Joint Managing Director of Hindusthan National Glass & Industries Ltd (HNG), India's largest container glass manufacturer, has been honoured with the 'Entrepreneur of the year' award at the recently concluded Indspirit '09 in Mumbai. The accolade came as the recognition of his remarkable contribution to the success of HNG in making it the undisputed leader in the glass packaging industry with more than 60% market share along with the highest capacity in the entire glass manufacturing industry with 2575 tonnes per day. The award has been given by the alcobev industry to its largest supplier of glass packaging.

Mr. Mukul Somany's contribution to the success of HNG can be seen in its growth story under his leadership, transforming the organisation from a two unit set up to a pan India business comprising of plants in Rishra, Bahadurgarh, Rishikesh, Puducherry, Nashik and Neemrana. Through a series of acquisitions since 2002, from national as well as international players, Mr. Somany has charted an aggressive growth path for the company with a topline growth from Rs. 230 crore in FY 2000-01 to Rs.1300 crore in FY 2008-09 - A five times growth in eight years -.

At a time when the domestic industry struggled to keep pace with global technologies and international players faced constraints in bringing efficiencies in their India operations, Mr. Mukul Somany transformed HNG with a combination of technological prowess and astute management skills to combat the problems of operational efficiencies in a capital and labour intensive industry. Today, HNG has not only garnered the most prestigious set of customers in the liquor, cosmetics, beverages, processed foods and pharmaceuticals sectors but also manufactures world class products which are exported to over 22 countries.

Hindusthan National Glass (HNG) is the largest container glass manufacturers in India with a 60% plus market share and an annual income of more than Rs. 1300 crores, as recorded in FY 09. HNG was founded by Mr. C.K. Somany - a visionary entrepreneur in 1952 with the inauguration of India's first fully automatic glass container manufacturing plant at Rishra, near Calcutta. Headquartered in Kolkata, HNG's pan-India manufacturing operations are spread over six centres Rishra, Bahadurgarh, Rishikesh, Puducherry, Nashik and Neemrana and its products are available in more than 20 countries.

The premier alcobev industry conference and exhibition, IndSpirit 2009, took place recently at the Renaissance Mumbai Hotel and Convention Centre.
