“Cultural Values with Creativity”

Sima Thakkar

Most modern Indian woman have found that they are more interested in playing sports, learning musical instruments or focusing on their career rather than staying at home learning cultural values. Many Indians who have been born and brought up abroad have never found the time to learn all these cultural traits, however they do hope to preserve them but have never really taken the time to learn. Sima Thakkar is a young entrepreneur who has come to their rescue with goodindiangirl.com a site that brings a fresh look to traditional values.Sima Thakkar told Yourstory more about Good Indian Girl in a stirring tete a tete.

What is Good Indian Girl and who is it for?

Good Indian Girl is an edgy, irreverent video-based how-to website that educates second generation audiences on age-old cultural traditions and nuances in a fresh fashion. We provide short, quirky how-to videos on all things Indian, in addition to a database of vendors. Our service will expand into other cultures as well (Japanese, Chinese, Latin, Jewish, etc).

Which region does your site get the most traffic from?

Good Indian Girl

So far we’ve seen major traffic from the US, India, and the UK granted that is where it is most relevant. However, we are surprisingly also getting tons of traffic from more unexpected regions around the globe from people who are interested in learning about the culture even though they may not be surrounded by it or have any strong direct ties or influences to the culture. Our videos are extremely simple and great for anyone who is interested in learning really basic things about Indian culture. What lies in the future for your business?

Good Indian Girl is a subsidiary of Good Girl, Inc which will expand across several other ethnic markets, for example, Good Chinese Girl, Good Japanese Girl, etc. We will be providing lots of rich content that will allow people to learn more about their culture, in addition to understanding other cultures, that will be useful for lifestyle choices, business travel and much more.

What is your primary focus at Good Indian Girl?

Right now we’re really focusing on making sure our users enjoy the content and more importantly find it useful. We already have over 50,000 views on YouTube and that number is growing exponentially – so it’s definitely gone viral already and that number continues to grow at a pretty high trajectory. Once our foundation is established and we can ensure high quality content for our viewers, we can focus on some of the other bigger achievements and goals that we have established.

What do you think is the key to being a successful entrepreneur?

I would say one key element to entrepreneurship is being aware of the gap of time from when your idea surfaces to when you execute. I live in the Bay Area and I’m surrounded by so many bright entrepreneurs and one quality that they all seem to have is that the amount of time from when they say they are going to do something to when they actually do it is usually pretty small. So I think turning things around fairly quickly is pretty important and you can make adjustments as you go along, but the trick is to not spend too much time merely speculating and over planning your idea because that generally leads to not following through at all.

Yourstory wishes Sima Thakkar and Good Indian Girl success and many site hits. We hope to see their take on resurgent values and traditions spread to all races and creeds.
