Riding on the massive success of the App Store for their handheld devices, Apple has launched a similar initiative for its Mac range. This OS X application market is similar to the iOS App Store and is designed to carry forward the app buying experience to Apple desktops and laptops across the world. The Mac App Store, at present, has over a 1000 titles and the mix includes some usual suspects like iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband, along with third-party apps like Flight Control HD and Pixelmator. The Mac App Store is available as a free software update for Mac computers running Mac OS X v10.6 or later. So, if you are running an old version of the OS X, you will have to upgrade to the Snow Leopard. The Mac App store going live does seem like great news for the developer community in India. However, we're concerned that Apple's (in)famous content policies might play spoilsport. Well, we haven't heard of any awful rejection stories yet. But we expect them to come in as the scale of this app market increases.
If you're a Mac user and/or developer, please do let us know what you think of this initiative from Apple. You can also write to the author at [email protected]
