Hami – a soft peck on a baby’s cheek in Bengali, was started by Tamagna Ghosh out of his love and passion for art, photography, music and lifestyle. One can comfortably say that Hami is all about cult-youth and fine photography, with a special inclination towards music and lifestyle. An IIT Kharagpur alumnus and an MBA from MDI, Gurgaon, Tamagna got back to nurturing his creative dream after completing his studies. He has been a student of art since he was in class 1, with a 10 year course in painting.
His inspiration comes from a mixed bag of experiences, starting from Satyajit Ray's Feluda rendition, Rabindranath Tagore's art work to Andy Warhol's revolutionary art forms and the dark/rebellious graffiti art in the shady areas of European countries. He has experimented with different genres of photography over the last couple of years. He has been working towards bridging the gap between Indian rock music and Indian art, while actively working with bright minds in the Music industry.
Major investments that he made to start HAMI included professional photography equipments and professional editing systems, apart from a lot of passion and time. He feels that the Indian art industry has its own set of problems and issues. “There is a huge lack of communication, infrastructure and inadequate information available on new technology. Also the industry lacks promotional support as compared to its western counterparts. Coupled with this, there are regulatory issues pertaining to art, beefing up the art education infrastructure, the way artworks are looked upon from ‘instruments of wealth creation’ to ‘Intellectual Property’, a need is strongly felt for developing a holistic policy approach towards the sector as also for better enforcement of the existing policy instruments.”
He feels India needs to explore more of new media art formats and has to catch up a lot as compared to the world trends.
Talking about his revenue model, he works on the USP of providing fine-art photography or hand-made canvas art products coupled with interior art consultation. So, for example, if you have a room and you are looking to get a customized art piece and really don’t have any clue what to put up, HAMI comes to your rescue. “All you need to do is share with us a picture of your room and brief us about your requirement. We tell you the color combination/type of art that would complement the décor. Besides this, I also do professional photography assignments and work very closely with the Indian music industry.”He completely believes in the influence social media has on people. “About 90% of my business development happens due to the power of social networking. Being a techie myself, I see to it that I explore this free and effective medium to its fullest.”
“Only creative talent doesn’t suffice. You need to be present at the right place at the right time to make your art/photography passion as a mode of business”, says Tamagna, as matter-of-factly.
