In order to foster entrepreneurship among the research community in India, IKP Knowledge Park and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), DBT, Government of India launched a new grant opportunity, the Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) Scheme.

The Biotech Ignition Grant (BIG) Scheme was launched in June of 2012 for early stage start-ups and researchers looking to start their own company, especially for those who wish to establish proof-of-concept for a new idea.

  • Chosen candidates will receive up to INR 50 lakhs, for a research project with duration of up to 18 months.
  • The candidates will receive mentoring and networking help from a BIG Partner of the applicant's choice, during the course of the project.
  • The candidates will be requested to choose a BIG Partner among three prominent incubators in the country. IKP Knowledge Park as one of three BIG Partners will be responsible for reviewing proposals, disbursing the funds for the winners of the grant, and monitoring the projects.
The scope of the program is very broad, including all areas of Healthcare, Biotechnology, Bio-energy, and Agriculture. The proposal will be judged on novelty, potential impact, execution capability, commercialization plan, competition in the market, and relevance to the BIG Scheme.  Please note that you must be an early stage start-up, or a researcher willing to start your own company in the near future.  An individual researcher must enroll with an incubator in order to receive the grant.

The application must be submitted online and is available at BIRAC . Please note that the deadline for submission is July 15, 2012.

If you need any clarifications, please email us at [email protected] or call on +91-87906-72424. Please feel free to recommend the program to a colleague who may be interested. We wish you the best in your application for the Biotechnology Ignition Grant, and look forward to hearing from you.
